We are all done with Heat 2 of this year’s 3MT competition!
Condensing years of research down into a 3-minute talk is a very difficult task, and all of the students who presented today did a fantastic job of making their research approachable to a general audience. Thanks to them for having the courage to share.
Here are the results for this Heat:
Third Place goes to Matti Mcfarlane from Translational Medicine! Matti’s research showed how there is a gap between the number of asthma diagnoses and the amount of rigorous testing done to confirm those diagnoses. She is creating a novel way to confirm the illness via a Provider Asthma Assessment Form.
Second place goes to Nawanjani Pathinayake from Biology! Nawanjani’s research couldn’t be more timely, as she focuses on the health consequences of repeated exposure to wildfire smoke. She and her lab use fruit flies to detect the effects of aspirating the smoke for human health outcomes.
First place goes to Danielle Harper from Pathology & Molecular Medicine! Danielle’s research was focused on metastatic breast cancer, and how that spread can be reduced using molecules called calpains. Her research shows promise in stopping the spread of cancer in mice.
Heat 2 is all wrapped up – thank you to our participants, and we’ll see you tomorrow for the final Heat!
