Teaching provides academics with personally and professionally rewarding experiences in the classroom. However, teaching also presents a series of risks, ranging from (un)conscious biases to backlashes against controversial or uncomfortable material. Based upon our identities and experiences, these risks and rewards of teaching may be distributed unevenly. For this reason, building an inclusive teaching community means recognizing that our classrooms are rarely neutral spaces for both ourselves, as educators, as well as for our students. Teaching takes place in a context of systemic barriers that may require different pedagogical strategies for different teachers. Panelists from across the university will unpack some of the nuance and complexity of such pedagogical risks and rewards, with a special emphasis on the connections between positionality and pedagogy, as well as strategies for early career instructors.
