Scholarships & Awards

Some scholarships and awards require students to submit an application to Financial Aid and Awards or their faculty. To apply for the majority of these awards, students should submit a resume and letter explaining how they meet the selection criteria for the specific award. 

Students who are currently registered at Queen's University can apply for the following awards. Students will be notified by either Financial Aid and Awards or their faculty if they have been selected for an award.

The following awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen's donors.
 

Full Course Load 

If the terms of your award state that you must have a full course load, then you must be registered as a full-time student carrying a full course load in an undergraduate degree program. A full course load is successfully completing a minimum of 80% of the full course load required for the faculty you are registered in. 

Reduced Course Load

If you are in your final year of studies and do not require the equivalent of 4.0 credits (80% of a full course load) to meet your degree requirements, you can take a reduced course load and still retain your scholarship so long as you are registered in at least the equivalent of 3.0 credits (60% of a full course load). You must inform Financial Aid and Awards in writing otherwise the scholarship will automatically be removed from your student account.

Chaplain's Bursary

Established from funds donated by the Toronto Alumni Branch and friends and awarded on the basis of financial need to an Ontario resident registered in any faculty or school at Queen's University. Application should be made to the University Chaplain. Selection will be made in consultation with Financial Aid and Awards.

Dance Club Award

Established in February 2015 by the Queen's Dance Club and awarded on the basis of satisfactory academic standing to full-time students in any year of any faculty or school, who are participating members of the Queen's Dance Club. This award celebrates students who are using their dancing talent and expertise to make a difference in the lives of fellow dance club members and increasing the exposure of the Queen's Dance Club on campus and in the community. Awarded to students who are positive ambassadors for the Queen's Dance Club on the basis of proven leadership skills, effective teamwork, and a demonstrated commitment to mentoring. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, resume (including past experience), and a letter of reference to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by 1 February. Margaret Hooey Governance Award

Established in November 2018 by the Estate of Margaret Lois Hooey, LL.D. 2002. Awarded to a student enrolled in any degree program at Queen's University who has made an outstanding contribution to the good governance of the University through work with the Senate or any Committee of the Senate. Letters of nomination, including self-nomination, should be submitted to the University Secretariat by 1 February each year. Selection will be made by the Margaret Hooey Governance Award Committee.

Kingston Field Naturalists Award for Queen's University Biological Station

Established in April 2007 by Kingston Field Naturalists in memory of Dr. Robert Stewart, Microbiologist at Queen's University and Past Honorary President of the KFN, and awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership qualities to an undergraduate student studying conservation science or natural history at the QUBS. Application by letter describing various leadership qualities and achievements should be made to the Head of the Department of Biology by March 31.

Charles C. J. Lorimer Memorial Award

Established in memory of Dr. Charles C.J. Lorimer, B.Sc. '79, M.D.'83. Awarded to a student in an upper year of science, medicine or other Faculty who, while maintaining good academic standing, has shown an understanding of the partnership of people with the natural world in the preservation and enrichment of the vitality and beauty of the earth. The recipient will have demonstrated this participation in wilderness living, travel, hiking, canoeing, by involvement in conservation or by similar activities. Application should be made by letter to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and  Awards) by 1 October. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

A. E. MacRae Award in Creative Leadership

Found by the late A.E. MacRae of Ottawa. The object of this prize is to promote on the part of the individual the practice of effectively appraising action from the point of view of others concerned. It is based on the idea that social progress requires of education the instilling in individuals the capacity to lead others in their actions, which are for the continuing good of all in the long term. It is intended to encourage students at Queen's to strive to evaluate competing interests and to seek out and advocate creative solutions, fairly and wisely balancing those interests. The recipient is required to write a short article on the purpose of the award and give his or her views on the methods by which the intentions of the award may be realized. The award is presented annually to the student in attendance at Queen's University who, prior to the beginning of his or her graduating year, has developed and exhibited the greatest capacity for creative leadership in the sense noted above. Application should be made by letter to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 1 February. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

Andrina McCulloch Prizes in Public Speaking

These prizes are awarded annually for the promotion and encouragement of public speaking in the University. Awards are made in the following fields: public speaking/thesis presentation, reading/ dramatization, and debating. The categories of the awards and the cash value of the prizes in any year are determined by a committee of the Senate. F. W. Minkler Award

Established by Mrs. Rachel S. Minkler in memory of Dr. Frederick W. Minkler who, in his years in the field of education, introduced many innovative measures in the continually expanding system. Awarded annually to the upper year student whose integrity, scholarship and contribution to Queen's University is outstanding. Application should be made by 1 October to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards). Two letters of reference are required. Selection will be made by the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

Vice Principal Research Undergraduate Prize

Established in February 2024 by the Vice-Principal Research. Awarded on the basis of research contributions at Queen’s University to students enrolled in an undergraduate degree program. The Vice-Principal Research Undergraduate Prize will award $1000 each to the recipients of the top two prizes at the Inquiry@ Queen’s conference. Applicants are to submit a research proposal to the Inquiry@ Queen’s conference held every March and present their work at this conference.

Ontario Remembrance Scholarship

Established in October 2020 by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities in remembrance of the 57 Canadians lost in the crash of Ukrainian Airlines flight 752 in January 2020. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in community service to students in any year of any first entry undergraduate degree program in any Faculty or School at Queen's University. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by 7 October. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

Ontario-Ukraine Solidarity Scholarship

Established in October 2022 by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities support of students affected by the Russian military invasion of Ukraine.  Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to Ukrainian students (Citizens of Ukraine) in any year of any degree program in any Faculty or School at Queen's University. In a personal statement (approx. 500 words), students should describe how they have been impacted by the conflict in Ukraine and describe how this scholarship would help meet their academic objectives. As part of their response, students should describe how they have demonstrated academic achievement and/or community service. If there are insufficient qualified Ukrainian students, then students who have been impacted by other conflicts and/or been forcibly displaced will be considered.  Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by February 1st. Queen's Alumni Association Toronto Branch Award

Established in May 2006 by the Queen's Alumni Association Toronto Branch and awarded to an undergraduate student in the final year of studies in any faculty or school at Queen's University who has demonstrated leadership in community service at Queen's or within the Kingston or Toronto communities while maintaining a minimum B (65%) average. The award will be granted to students whose address on admission to Queen's University was the Greater Toronto area. Preference will be given to students who can show that they have received a job offer from an employer in the Greater Toronto area and that they have accepted the position after graduation. A letter of application, along with a resume and one letter of reference, should be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 1 February. Selection will be made by a sub-committee of the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

Norman, Ian and Lorna Rogers Scholarship

Established by the estate of Arthur W. McLeod Rogers in 1991 and revised in December 2013. Awarded annually at the close of each academic year to an Alma Mater Society (AMS) member who has shown the most outstanding leadership in student life during such academic year. Selection will be made by a committee chaired by a member of the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid, and comprising a representative from the AMS Executive, a member of the AMS Assembly, the Rector, and a representative from the Office of the Vice-Provost and Dean of Student Affairs, or their delegates. Nomination letters should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by 1 February. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

Gordon A. Snider Prize in the History of Technology

Established by colleagues and family of Gordon Snider, B.A. '74, respected teacher and ardent student of the history of technology and engineering in Canada. Awarded annually to an undergraduate student in any faculty or school for the best essay on the historical development of some aspect of technology. This essay must exhibit thorough research and originality and illustrate the impact of technology on the community. Preference will be given to a Canadian topic. Selection will be made by an inter-faculty committee chaired by an appointee of the Dean of Smith Engineering. Applications should be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid, and Awards by October 1. 

Edward Somppi Awards

Established by Edward Somppi, Commerce '43. Up to six prizes are awarded to members of the Queen's Players or the Queen's Musical Theatre who are full-time undergraduate students. Selection is based on contribution to club activities and preference is given to members who have appeared in public performances. The prizes are awarded by a committee comprising the A.M.S. Campus Activities Commissioner, the chair of the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid, the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards), the president of the Queen's Players, the president of the Queen's Musical Theatre and one member-at-large from each club. Nominations from any member of the Queen's Players or the Queen's Musical Theatre are to be made in writing to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 1 February. STRIVE Awards in Environmental Studies

Established by Students Taking Responsible Initiatives for a Viable Environment (STRIVE) and awarded to any undergraduate student at Queen's who combines environmental volunteer work with academic achievement. Consideration will be given to students who have achieved an overall average of at least 75 percent who participated in extracurricular activities that benefit the Queen's community. These activities should be related to the visibility, education and the promotion of awareness of environmental issues. To apply, submit a letter of application, resume, and no more than three letters of reference to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 1 February. Candidates can also be nominated and must provide the same information. The successful candidates will be selected by a committee made up of a STRIVE member, a faculty member from the School of Environmental Studies, and the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) or delegate. Prince Takamado Visiting Student Scholarship at Queen's University

The Prince Takamado Visiting Student Scholarship at Queen's University is awarded to a second or third-year student of Japanese nationality (citizen) who is currently enrolled in a Japanese university, and who will study at Queen's University on a Letter of Permission from their home university. Application should be made to Undergraduate Admission by December 1. Undergraduate Admission will forward all applications from qualified applicants to Financial Aid and Awards.

Arts 1950 Scholarship

Given by the members of the Class of Arts '50 in sincere appreciation of the benefits received while students at Queen's University. Awarded annually to a student entering final year in the Faculty of Arts and Science who has made a personal contribution to the life of the University and who has maintained a GPA of at least 2.0 on the work of his or her program. Applications are to be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by 1 February. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

Arts Management Award

Established in March 2009 by an anonymous donor to encourage students pursuing careers in Arts Management. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to students in year three or four of a minor, major, medial or concentration in Drama who are currently registered in, or have completed, a Commerce course(s), or to students who are registered in year three or four in the Bachelor of Commerce program and are currently registered in, or have completed, a Drama course(s). The student recipient must have an interest in Arts Management as demonstrated through taking relevant courses and work or volunteer experience in Arts Management. A letter of application is to be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards, by February 1st. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

ASUS Scholarships

Established in November 1979 and revised in May 2018 by the Arts and Science Undergraduate Society (ASUS). Awarded on the basis of achievement in extra-curricular activities and academic excellence to students entering fourth year of an Honours degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities. Up to 3 scholarships will be granted as follows: one each to students with a major, medial or specialization in (a) Creative Arts, Humanities or Languages, (b) Social Sciences, and (c) Natural and Physical Science. Applications are to be submitted to the Faculty of Arts and Science by 30 April. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts & Science Awards Committee.

Fred Lamble Bartlett Memorial Award

Established in November 2001 by family, friends, and former students in memory of Fred Lamble Bartlett. Last revised in July 2022. Awarded to students entering fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) or a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree program with an academic plan offered by the School of Kinesiology and Health Sciences. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement, integrity, leadership, and a sensitivity to and respect for the feelings of others. Nominations should be submitted to the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies by a date to be announced each year. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science. 

Harold and Helen Cave Scholarship

The terms for this award are cross listed with Exchange and Bader College Awards requiring an application.

Harold M. Cave Undergraduate Travel Scholarship

Established in June 2014 by the estate of Harold M. Cave, B.A.1925, M.A. 1926 and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students in any undergraduate year of an honours degree in Physics or Astronomy in the Faculty of Arts and Science or an honours degree in Engineering Physics in Smith Engineering. Awarded to students for the purpose of attending the Canadian Undergraduate Physics Conference or other equivalent conference. Funds are to be used to cover conference fees and travel related expenses. Selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee of the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy. Applicants are to submit a letter of application to the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics & Astronomy by 30 September. Value: To be determined annually.

Clarkson Essay Prizes

Established by Max Clarkson, Toronto. Awarded annually by the Dan School of Drama and Music to a student or students enrolled in the drama program (major, medial, minor or Stage and Screen Studies) judged to have submitted the best essay on any aspect of theatre or drama practice, history, criticism, or analysis. Submissions to be made to the Dan School of Drama and Music prior to 15 April.

Department of Classics Travel Grant

Established in January 2010 by the friends of the Department of Classics. Granted to graduate students or undergraduates registered in the Department of Classics. The grant is available to contribute to the support of field research that must be carried out at a considerable distance from Queen's University. Granted on the basis of the academic merit and feasibility of the proposed field study research described within the Department of Classics Travel Grant application. Selection will be made by the Department of Classics Awards Committee.

Wes and Dorletta Curran Memorial Award

Established with donations from former research assistants, Curran family members, friends and colleagues in honour of Wes and Dorletta Curran. Dr. Curran was an outstanding teacher and the founding Director of the Queen's University Biological Station (Q.U.B.S.). Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to a full-time student in an Honours program in Biology. Preference will be given to students planning to reside at QUBS in order to pursue field and laboratory research in aquatic biology at QUBS, illuminating the ecology of the freshwater habitat. Successful candidates must agree to use approximately 80% of the value of the award to assist in the cost attending and residing at QUBS. Application forms are available at the Department of Biology and should be returned to the Department of Biology by 15 February. Selection will be made by the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards in consultation with the Department of Biology.

Dean's Special Award

Up to ten scholarships to be awarded in the fall to Arts and Science students returning from international exchange programs. To be eligible, students must be returning to Queen's and must submit a statement of no more than 500 words describing the ways in which the exchange experience enriched their lives and affected their outlook both academically and personally. The Awards Committee of the Faculty of Arts and Science will make decisions based on this statement and on the applicant's prior academic record. This scholarship will not be awarded to students who hold other awards of equal or greater value. Applications must be submitted by October 1 and should be addressed to: The Awards Committee, International Programs Office, B206 Mackintosh-Corry Hall, Queen's University, Kingston, ON K7L 3N6.

Jesse V. Deslauriers QUBS Diversity Award

Established in February 2021 by Queen's University Biological Station from the proceeds of an endowment created by the Estate of Jessie V. Deslauriers. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement to students who self-identify as Indigenous, Black Canadians or Visible Minority/Racialized students in any year of any Faculty or School at Queen's University who are enrolled in a field course at the Queen's University Biological Station. Preference will be given to students who have completed at least second year before the field course begins. Applications will be considered for any field course in Biology, Environmental Studies or Geography within the calendar year of application. Instructions for application are available on qubs.ca. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee based upon nomination from the Department of Biology

G. B. Dyer/DuPont Canada Scholarships

Fred Euringer Award in Drama

Established by colleagues and friends to honour the long and distinguished career of J.A. (Fred) Euringer, actor, director, playwright and teacher, and for many years the Head of the Department of Drama. Awarded annually to a student enrolled in a Queen's University Drama program and is intended to facilitate the recipient's ability to create theatre within the Kingston community. Applications will available from the Dan School of Drama and Music and must be submitted by March 31. A covering letter outlining the proposed activity for which the award is to be used as well as a curriculum vitae and /or a portfolio of work appropriate to the student's area of interest should be included. 

French Exchange Scholarship

Gowan Foundation No. II Prize

Founded by the late Sir James R. Gowan, K.C.M.G. Awarded for the best collection of Canadian plants. The plants must be good specimens, well pressed, and mounted on regular herbarium sheets or placed in other herbarium containers. They may represent any group of higher or lower plants. The collection must be submitted to the Department of Biology before 15 December.

Lorne Greene Award

Established by Lorne Greene, B.A. 1937, LL.D. 1971, and awarded annually to a student or students in drama who graduates at either fall or spring convocation in a current academic year for outstanding achievement in the practical and performing aspects of theatre while at Queen's. Assessment of the applicants shall be based equally on the following: 1) the highest average (not less than 80 per cent in each course) in the equivalent of 3.0 credits as specified by the Dan School of Drama and Music; 2) a submitted resume demonstrating a sustained level of participation in university theatrical activity. Final selection shall be decided by the Drama faculty of the Dan School of Drama and Music in April. For application details, including the requisite courses, please consult the Department. Applications should be submitted to the Lorne Greene Screening Committee (Dan School of Drama and Music) on the prescribed form no later than 31 March.

Michael R. G. Harris Memorial Scholarship in History

Established by his parents in memory of Michael R.G. Harris. Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Department of History to a student in the second, third, or fourth year of a B.A.(Honours) program with a major or medial concentration in History for the best essay on the history and practice of neutrality and pacific settlement of international disputes. Each essay must be submitted to the Chair of the Department by the last day of classes of the Winter Term.

Don Krestel Memorial Award

Sponsored by PHESA and established by friends of Donald Andrew Krestel, B.A.-B.P.H.E., '74 whose untimely death in the Fall of 1974 prematurely cut short a great potential for service to the human community. The award, which consists of a plaque and a cash prize, is normally given annually to a student in the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Kinesiology program in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, who is deemed by the selection committee best able to promote among his or her classmates an appreciation of the needs of the individual and of the community and of the application of their knowledge and abilities for the common good of all, particularly those who are disadvantaged. Nominations for the award may be made to the Undergraduate Coordinator by students of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies prior to 15 February.

Sir Wilfrid Laurier Memorial Prize

Founded by the Ontario Women's Liberal Association. The scholarship, to perpetuate the memory of the late Sir Wilfrid Laurier, is awarded by the Ontario Women's Liberal Association for proficiency in French conversation, on recommendation of the Department of French Studies, to a Canadian student (by birth or naturalization) whose native tongue is not French. Applications should be received by the Department of French prior to 15 February in each year.

Margaret and Robert Montgomery Scholarship in Arts and Science

Established in March 2015 by The Honourable Robert A. F. Montgomery, Arts'50, Com'51, and his wife Margaret Montgomery and awarded on the basis of academic excellence, and demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities or community service, to students entering fourth year of an honours Bachelor of Arts degree or an honours Bachelor of Science degree in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, with attached resume to the Faculty of Arts and Science by 30 April. Selection will be made by the Faculty of Arts and Science Awards Committee..

Kenneth G. Murray Making a Difference through Music

Established in May 2014 by Dr. Sherry L. Dupuis, B.Mus. 1985, and Dr. Bryan Smale in honour of their dear friend and mentor, Kenneth G. Murray, for his commendable volunteer and philanthropy work dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and wellbeing of individuals and communities. The award celebrates students who are using their musical talents and gifts to make a difference in the lives of others. Awarded to students in a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Arts (Honours) with a major or medial plan in music. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated leadership, and volunteer community involvement in the development or provision of music outreach, through program or activity organization, coaching, or mentorship. Selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee of the Dan School of Drama and Music. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, resume and two letters of reference to the Dan School of Drama and Music by 30 March.

Northeastern Chemical Association Scholarship

Established by Northeastern Chemical Association, Inc. and awarded to a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in Chemical Engineering, Engineering Chemistry or Chemistry on the basis of academic performance and interest in science issues. Students must submit a letter of application outlining goals, interests, career objectives and experience to the Head of their department by 15 March, who will then forward nominations by 1 April to their respective Scholarship Committee.

PHE Canada Student Award

Awarded by PHE Canada to a student entering third or fourth year in an undergraduate program in the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Kinesiology program in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies. The award will be presented annually in March to a student in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies on the basis of academic standing and student leadership in a student health, physical education or recreation organization. The recipient will receive a one-year student membership in PHE Canada and serve as a liaison between PHEKSA and PHE Canada during the school year following the award with the responsibility of publicizing and promoting the professional work of PHE Canada on campus. Nominations for the award may be made to the PHE Canada Faculty Representative (Undergraduate Coordinator) prior to 15 February.

Danielle Polk Memorial Award

Established in April 2002 by family, classmates and friends at Queen's University in memory of Danielle Polk, B.P.H.E. 1999, and awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Physical and Health Education program or the Bachelor of Science (Honours) Kinesiology program in the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies who is entering fourth year and who best demonstrates a combination of a solid academic record (overall minimum "B" cumulative average), enthusiasm for life and the outdoors, love of humanity, and devotion to family and friends. Nominations should be submitted to the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies by 15 February. Selection will be made in consultation with the Awards Committee of the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies.

Rector Norman McLeod Rogers Prize

Established in memory of Norman Rogers (1894-1940), who held the Chair of Politics at Queen's from 1929 to 1935. Combining academic distinction with a commitment to public life, Mr. Rogers was elected M.P. for Kingston in 1935 and served subsequently as Minister of Labour. At the time of his death he was Canada's Minister of National Defence. Among his many accomplishments and honours, Mr. Rogers was selected as a Rhodes Scholar for Nova Scotia and from 1938 was Rector of Queen's. The prize is awarded to a graduating undergraduate or graduate student in the Departments of Political Studies, Economics, History, or the Public Administration program in the School of Policy Studies, who intends after completion of his or her studies to enter politics or the public service. A letter of application, with a current transcript and resume, should be submitted to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 1 February; no other material will be considered by the committee. Selection will be made by a committee chaired by the Head of Political Studies, and comprising the Heads of Economics and History, the Director of the School of Policy Studies and a representative of the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid, or their delegates. The three top-ranked candidates will be interviewed by the Committee. Candidates interviewed should expect the focus of the interview will relate, directly or indirectly, to topics associated to the candidate's interest in public service and/or public policy issues. To apply please submit an Awards with Separate Application form.

James H. Stitt Prize in Poetry

Walter Thumm Memorial Scholarship in Physics

Established by his family and friends in memory of Walter Thumm, Professor at Queen's until his death in 1977. By his understanding and enjoyment of physics, by his writing, and by his own example, he inspired countless students and teachers of physics. Awarded on the recommendation of the Physics Department to a student beyond the second year who has indicated his/her intention of pursuing a career in teaching physics, preferably at the high school level, and who has a strong aptitude in physics as well as a demonstrated commitment to teaching. Applications should be made prior to 31 March to the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy.

Frank B. Lee Memorial Scholarship in Engineering

Established in 2001 and revised in October 2013 by friends and family of Frank B. Lee, B.Sc. 1945 and awarded on the basis of academic excellence, creative and original thinking, proven leadership skills, and involvement in school or community activities to a student with a cumulative GPA in the top 5% of their class entering the third year of any engineering program in Smith Engineering. If, after all other consideration, two or more students are considered equivalent, and if applicable, financial need will be used as the deciding factor. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, resume, and two letters of reference to Smith Engineering by March 31. Selection will be made by the Operations Committee (Scholarships) in Smith Engineering, in consultation with the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid, and Awards if financial need is to be considered as a deciding factor. 

Accenture Scholarship in Applied Science

Established by Accenture in May 2002 and awarded to a student entering fourth year in Smith Engineering. Selection will be made on the basis of academic excellence and leadership in extra-curricular activities, such as professional or social organizations, sports, or part-time employment. Preference will be given to students who have had exposure to a consulting business or initiative in the past. Application is by letter with attached resume to Smith Engineering by March 31. 

Frederick and Christopher Ansley Scholarship

Established by Peter Ansley's family in honour of his father Frederick C. Ansley, B.Sc. (Eng.) 1937 and brother Christopher Ansley, B.Sc. (Eng.) 1969, and awarded to a student entering the fourth year of the Civil Engineering program. Selection will be based on academic excellence and contribution to the betterment of campus life through interest in the student chapters of the profession, Engineering Society, campus activities and community affairs. Applications and nominations should be submitted to the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering by 1 March. Selection will be made by the Departmental Awards Committee.

Cameron Applied Science Scholarship

Established by Hugh Cameron, B.Sc. 1973, and Heather Hume, B.A. 1972, M.D. 1978. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student in third or fourth year of any program in Smith Engineering who has applied his or her engineering knowledge and/or techniques in an innovative manner related to non-traditional engineering fields. Nominations may be made by faculty members or students should apply by letter, with attached resume, to Smith Engineering by October 1.

David Atherton Engineering Physics Award

Awarded to a student, with at least second class standing, entering preferably the third or alternatively the fourth year of the Engineering Physics program. The student's total awards, administered by Queen's University, will not exceed twice the tuition fees for Canadian Residents. The award is restricted to women until such time as 50% of the students registered in Engineering Physics are women. Applications should be made by March 31 to the Advisor for Engineering Physics, who will make the nominations on behalf of the Department.

Harold M. Cave Undergraduate Travel Scholarship

Established in June 2014 by estate of Harold M. Cave, B.A.1925, M.A. 1926 and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to students in any undergraduate year of an honours degree in Physics or Astronomy in the Faculty of Arts and Science or an honours degree in Engineering Physics in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. Awarded to students for the purpose of attending the Canadian Undergraduate Physics Conference or other equivalent conference. Funds are to be used to cover conference fees and travel related expenses. Selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee of the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy. Applicants are to submit a letter of application to the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics and Astronomy by 30 September.

Civil Engineering '85 Award

Awarded annually to a 4th year student in Civil Engineering who has contributed to the betterment of campus life through interest in the Engineering Society, Civil Club, campus activities and community affairs. The successful candidate must have maintained a satisfactory academic record. Applications and nominations should be submitted to the Head of the Civil Engineering Department. Applications and nominations should be submitted to the Head of the Civil Engineering Department by 15 January.

ConeTec Geotechnical Award

Established in October 2012 and revised in September 2018 by ConeTec Investigations Ltd. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement, proven leadership skills, and a keen interest and aptitude for geotechnical engineering, including site investigations, to students enrolled in second or third year of a Bachelor of Applied Science degree program in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering. A letter of application, along with a one to two page submission outlining their interests and engagement in geotechnical engineering and site investigations, through courses taken and co-curricular activities, is to be submitted to Smith Engineering by September 30 for selection by the Operations Committee (Scholarship). Recipients will also be invited to interview for a paid summer position for a period of at least 16 weeks at one of ConeTec's field operations; acceptance of employment is not a condition of this award.

G. B. Dyer/DuPont Canada Scholarships

Established by DuPont Canada Inc. to recognize the significant contribution of Gerry B. Dyer, B.Sc. '52, D.Sc. '94, to the improvement and advancement of science education. Two scholarships will be awarded, one to a male and one to a female, who are Canadian or permanent residents and entering the second year of study in Chemical Engineering, Engineering Chemistry or Chemistry. Selection is based on high academic standing with consideration given to participation in the community or extra-curricular activities. In the case of students being equally eligible, financial need will be considered. Letters of application must be submitted by 15 April to the Heads of the Department of Chemical Engineering or Chemistry who will then forward nominations to their respective Scholarship Committee.

Expo '86 Award

Established to commemorate the 1986 International Exposition held in Vancouver, and the Innovative Vehicle Design Competition held during the exposition, in which the team from Queen's University received fourth prize. Awarded on the recommendation of the Dean in consultation with the Engineering Society to a student entering the final year of a program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering in Smith Engineering. Selection will be on the basis of academic standing, a demonstrated ability in innovative engineering design, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Applications must be submitted to Smith Engineering for selection by Operations Committee (Scholarship) by March 31.

Mike Hamze Memorial Scholarship

Established in March 2002 by friends, family and co-workers in memory of Mike Hamze, B.Sc. 1997 (Eng.). Awarded to a student entering the third or fourth year in the Civil Engineering program in Smith Engineering based on academic merit and community involvement. Applicants should submit a letter of application, along with a resume, to the Head of the Department of Civil Engineering by March 31. 

Lawrence M. Hunter Memorial Award

Established in March 2007 by John L. Hunter, B.Sc. 1969, in memory of his father, Lawrence M. Hunter, B.Sc. 1936 and awarded to a student entering the third or fourth year of studies in Smith Engineering, who has made outstanding humanitarian contributions as evidenced through volunteer activities both within and outside of the university environment while maintaining satisfactory academic achievement. Preference will be given to candidates who have not received other University awards of higher value. This award may be received only once by an individual. Students in the second or third year of studies submit their application letter, accompanied by a resume and two letters of reference, one of which must be from an individual who can attest to the student's humanitarian efforts to Smith Engineering by March 15.

S. D. Lash Scholarship

Awarded to a graduating student in the Department of Civil Engineering to encourage travel during the summer preceding the start of a graduate program at any university, in order to give the recipient an appreciation of practical problems in their field of interest. Application is by letter, describing the studies they wish to pursue and the places they would like to visit, to be submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering by March 31. Selection will be made by the Departmental Scholarship Committee.

Dr. W. B. F. Mackay Memorial Scholarship in Mechanical and Materials Engineering

Established in May 2007 by family, friends, colleagues and students of the late Dr. William Brydon Fraser Mackay, HD.Sc (1993). Awarded to a student in the fourth year of the Materials Option in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering on the basis of academic excellence and contributions to furthering the well-being of the student body by way of active participation in volunteer activities, project teams, and professional and social activities within the Department. Application is by letter, with resume, to be submitted to the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering by 1 October.

Michele Mainland Memorial Graduating Scholarship in Chemical Engineering

Established in memory of Michele Mainland, B.Sc. 1997, by family, friends, and fellow students to honour Michele's love of learning and education. Awarded to a student graduating in Chemical Engineering with the highest academic standing and who is continuing to post-graduate studies either at Queen's University or at another institution. Candidates should submit a letter of application to the Head of the Department by 1 April detailing their intended course of study. The recipient will receive the award in the Fall term on confirmation of registration in graduate school.

McLean Family Award in Student Design

Established in March 2007 by the McLean family in honour of Kenneth McLean, B.Sc. Engineering Physics 2005, in appreciation for the valuable team experiences and life lessons learned from his active participation with the Queen's Solar Vehicle Team from 2001 to 2005.  Awarded to an upper-year student in Smith Engineering who has a cumulative average of at least 65% and who is actively involved on a student design team, with preference to students who are members of the Solar Team. Preference will be given to students whose address on admission to Queen's was from outside the Province of Ontario. Application is by letter, along with a written endorsement by a design team faculty member, to be submitted to Smith Engineering by March 31.

Mining Engineering Scholarship

Established in May 2007 by Bill James, LL.D 1990, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated leadership qualities to a student entering the fourth year of the Mining Engineering program in Smith Engineering. Students should apply by letter, with a resume, to the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining Engineering by March 31.

Emil Nenniger International Exchange Scholarship in Chemical Engineering

Established in April 2004 by Dr. Emil Nenniger, B.Sc. '50, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering third year in the Department of Chemical Engineering or Engineering Chemistry in Smith Engineering, who has been selected to participate in an official exchange program at a location outside Canada. A letter of application must be submitted to the Head of Chemical Engineering by 1 March. Selection will be made by the Departmental Scholarship Committee.

Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education Scholarships

Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education Admission Scholarships: Established by the Ontario Professional Engineers Foundation for Education and last revised in November 2021. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, and participation in extra-curricular activities to students entering the first year of a Bachelor of Applied Science degree program in Smith Engineering that is accredited by the CEAB.  

Orica Canada Ltd. Scholarship

Established in March 2014 by Orica Canada Ltd. and awarded on the basis of academic excellence and demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities and/or community service.  Awarded to students who are Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents entering third year in Chemical, Mechanical and Materials, or Mining Engineering.  Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in the mining industry. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, resume and two letters of reference to Smith Engineering by March 31. Selection will be made by the Operations Committee (Scholarship) of Smith Engineering.

Mark Pettit Memorial Prize

Established in April 2002 by friends and family in memory of Mark Pettit, B.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) 2000. Awarded annually to a student in the third year of the Mechanical Engineering program in Smith Engineering who has applied and been accepted into the Queen's Undergraduate Internship Program (QUIP). The candidate should demonstrate an enthusiasm for engineering and a proven record of helping his/her classmates, as well as a solid academic record. Nomination forms are available from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and must be submitted to the Department by 15 April. Selection of the candidate is made by the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in consultation with faculty and students. 

A. E. Segsworth Prize

Founded by R.F. Segsworth of Toronto in memory of his brother. Open to a student in any year on the basis of the best essay describing his or her experiences in practical underground mining. Essays to be submitted by 31 March.

Carolyn F. Small Memorial Award for Design Innovation

Established in December 2008 by friends and family in memory of Professor Carolyn F. Small, B.Sc. 1973, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated outstanding creativity in the practice of engineering design to an individual student or a group of students at Queen's University who are directly involved with academic or sponsored extracurricular design efforts associated with or funded by Smith Engineering. Letters of application must be submitted by March 31 to Smith Engineering for selection by the Operations Committee (Scholarship).

Walter Thumm Memorial Scholarship in Physics

Adam Wallgren Memorial Award

Founded by Science '90 in memory of Adam Wallgren and awarded to a first year engineering student who through his/her kind actions and friendly disposition eased the rigors of day-to-day life in first year. Written nominations should be submitted to the Engineering Society no later than 15 February. The recipient shall be selected by the Engineering Society Awards Committee, in consultation with the Dean, and awarded at the Engineering Society's Annual Retreat.

Zurbrigg Memorial Scholarship

Established by H. F. Zurbrigg, Science '31, in memory of his parents and awarded to a Canadian graduate of Smith Engineering who is continuing at Queen's either as a post-graduate in any faculty or as an undergraduate in the faculties of Law or Medicine. The award is made on the basis of scholarship and proficiency in the use of the English language. The recipient will receive the award in the Fall Term on confirmation of registration.

For all of the awards listed in this section, please submit the Elliot, Upitis, Bamji, Hajee, Grey Travel Fellowship form to Financial Aid and Awards. This form will be considered the Financial Statement required as an application for these awards.

Indigenous Teacher Education Bursary 

Established in November 2015 by Nancy Gray, BA'77 and her husband William Gray and last revised in September 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Education degree program. First preference will be given to Indigenous students enrolled in the Indigenous Teacher Education program; second preference to students enrolled in the Indigenous Teacher Education Program; third preference to Indigenous students. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid, and Awards by October 31. 

Bamji International Practicum Placement Award

Established in November 2004 by Dr. Pervez (Perry) and Mrs. Annamaria Bamji to promote goodwill and understanding amongst students participating in international study. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to support a final year full-time Concurrent Education student in the Faculty of Education, wishing to broaden their studies in the international environment through and alternative placement. The award may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken. The application process consists of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Financial Aid and Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Student Services, Faculty of Education. Selection will be made by the Bamji/Elliott/Hajee/Upitis Awards Committee in the Faculty of Education. At the end of their international practicum placement, award recipients are expected submit a report or paper outlining the results of their studies abroad.

Charles Martyn Elliott and Kathleen Mead Elliott Award for Travel Fellowships in Education

Established in memory of Charles Martyn Elliott (Arts '44, and the first Superintendent of Schools in the City of Oshawa) and Kathleen Mead Elliott (Arts '42, and a member of the executive of the Queen's Summer School Association) by a bequest from the estate of Kathleen Mead Elliott. Elliott Travel Fellowships for study outside Canada in the field of teacher education, pedagogy, or a related field are awarded to students enrolled in the Faculty of Education. In order to be eligible for this award, applicants must demonstrate financial need. Fellowships may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken. The application process consists of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Financial Aid and Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Student Services, Faculty of Education. Selection will be made by the Bamji/Elliott/Hajee/Upitis Awards Committee in the Faculty of Education. Preference is given for small budget, high impact proposals. At the end of their international practicum placement, award recipients are expected submit a report or paper outlining the results of their studies abroad.

The Hajee Family Travel Fellowships in Education

Established in November 2014 by Khalil and Jessica Hajee to promote research or development projects in Africa. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to full-time students in teacher education or graduate programs in the Faculty of Education wishing to broaden their studies through an alternative practicum placement or research project in Africa. The award may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University and to other academic institutions in connection with the studies undertaken. The application process consists of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Financial Aid and Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Student Services, Faculty of Education. Selection will be made by the Bamji/Elliott/Hajee/Upitis Awards Committee in the Faculty of Education.

Upitis International Study Award

Awarded annually to full-time students in teacher education and graduate programs enrolled in any Faculty of Education program wishing to broaden their studies in the international environment through an alternative placement. Awarded on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in extracurricular activities, preferably volunteer work for humanitarian causes. The application process consists of two stages: 1) a financial statement submitted in September to Financial Aid and Awards to determine eligibility 2) a proposal and application submitted in November to Student Services, Faculty of Education. Selection will be made by the Bamji/Elliott/Hajee/Upitis Awards Committee in the Faculty of Education.

Susan Nelles Scholarship

Established by Susan Nelles Pine, B.N.Sc. `78, a courageous and devoted paediatric nurse, in memory of her father James Nelles, Meds `50 and her brother David Nelles, Meds `78. James and David Nelles were dedicated paediatricians.  This scholarship is awarded to a student with an interest in parent-child nursing entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science program on the basis of academic excellence in Nursing 370 (Family-Centred Nursing Care) and a pass in Nursing 371 (Practicum in Family-Centred Nursing Care). Application is made by letter to the Awards Committee of the School of Nursing and should demonstrate one's interest in this field. Deadline for application for the award is 31 July.

Northern Canada Nursing Study Award

Established in February 2021 by Phyllis Durnford, BNSc 1969. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in the fourth year of a Bachelor of Nursing Science program in the Faculty of Health Sciences wishing to broaden their studies through a practicum placement, with preference given to a placement in northern Canada: (Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Yukon) or northern rural and remote areas in other provinces. The award may be used for travel expenses, living expenses, and academic fees payable to Queen's University. The application process consists of an application submitted in March to the School of Nursing Awards Committee. Selection will be made by the School of Nursing Awards Committee in the Faculty of Health Sciences in consultation with the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Dorothy Riches Scholarship

Established by Mrs. Marian Campbell, B.N.Sc. 1949, to honour the memory of Dorothy Riches, the first Director of the School of Nursing, Queen's University, from 1946 to 1949. Awarded to a student with an interest and high standing in psychiatric/mental health nursing entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Nursing Science program. Application is made by letter to the Awards Committee of the School of Nursing and should outline one's interest in this field. One letter of reference is required. Deadline for application is 30 April.

Accenture Scholarship in the Smith School of Business

Established in May 2002 and last revised in March 2018 by Accenture Inc. and awarded on the basis of academic excellence, proven leadership skills, and involvement in school or community activities to students in their second year in the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business.  Preference will be given to students who have had exposure to a consulting-type business or initiative, or who demonstrate a strong interest in consulting. A letter of application, with an attached resume, is to be submitted by 1 February for selection by the Commerce Awards Committee. Recipients will also be invited to apply for a paid summer internship experience, between their third and fourth year of study, for a period of 10-12 weeks at Accenture, and guaranteed an interview. Acceptance of employment is not a condition of this award.

Christopher R. Bennett Memorial Award

Established in May 2007 by the Commerce Society and re-named in 2011 in memory of Christopher Bennett. Mr. Bennett, a KPMG recruiter, was a tireless supporter of student initiatives and had a positive impact on countless lives within the Bachelor of Commerce program. Awarded on the basis of academic excellence, involvement in school or community activities, and demonstrated leadership qualities to students in the second year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business. Application is by letter, with attached resume, to the Undergraduate Office of the Smith School of Business by 30 September.

Dave Black Scholarship in Science and Technology Management

Established in February 2002 by friends and colleagues in memory of Dave Black, member of the School of Business MBA for Science & Technology Advisory Board. The scholarship is aimed at those who have shown entrepreneurial initiatives and who may be future drivers in the area of technology industries. Awarded annually to a student entering second, third or fourth year of the undergraduate Commerce program on the basis of academic performance, entrepreneurial experience in the area of technology, and leadership within the Queen's community. Application is by letter and attached resume and should be made to the Commerce Program Awards Committee by 30 September.

G. Kenneth Carr Accounting Scholarship

Established by Dr. Nancy Carr, Arts '72, Meds '75 in honour of her father, G. Kenneth Carr, F.C.A., Arts '37, Comm '39 (a retired partner of Ernst & Young). Awarded annually to a student entering the fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program who is majoring in the accounting area and has as a long-term goal a career in chartered accountancy. Final selection will be made in the fall of each year by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business on the basis of academic excellence. Among other things, the student should be grammatically proficient with an above average ability in clear and logical expression in any written report or other assignment required under the programs. Applications should be submitted by 15 September to the Smith School of Business.

Commerce 1986 Award in Memory of Jeffrey Brock

Established in May 2016 by the Class of Commerce 1986 leading up to their 30th reunion and in memory of their classmate, Jeffrey Brock, B.Com. 1986, who was President of ComSoc in his graduating year. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities or community service, to students in third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, with attached resume to the Smith School of Business by 30 September. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

Commerce Society Conference Bursary

Established in January 2021 by the Commerce Society. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce degree program in the Smith School of Business. Funds are to be used to cover conference or competition fees. Application forms, including submission deadlines, are available through the Commerce Portal. Selection will be made by the Commerce Awards Committee in consultation with Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards.

Dr. Robert Crandall Prize

Established by Jeffrey Mitz, Commerce '74, in honour of Dr. Robert Crandall, Emeritus Professor of Accounting. The Prize is awarded annually to a student entering 3rd year who has improved the life experience of those in the university and/or the greater Kingston community through committed leadership, and who has supported others through teamwork, motivation and example. A student may be nominated by his or her classmates (five signatures by 3rd year Commerce students are required) or by application to the Director of the Commerce Program. Nominations/applications are due by September 30 of each year. Selection will be made by the Commerce Program Awards Committee and will include members of the third year Commerce Society Executive.

Kehoe Social Impact Award

Established in March 2022 by the Centre for Social Impact in the Smith School of Business with funds originally provided by Michael Kehoe, BCom'78, and Lynne Kehoe. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement in the required course(s) for the Certificate in Social Impact, engagement in and contributions to the Centre for Social Impact to students entering third or fourth year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree program who are enrolled in the Certificate in Social Impact. The Centre for Social Impact will make an application form available each spring for nominations, including self-nomination. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business. 

Kehoe Social Impact Bursary

Established in March 2022 by the Centre for Social Impact in the Smith School of Business with funds originally provided by Michael Kehoe, BCom'78, and Lynne Kehoe. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce degree program or a Smith School of Business Professional Master’s degree program who are enrolled in the Certificate in Social Impact in the Smith School of Business. Applications are to be made to the Centre for Social Impact by 30 September.  Selection will be made by the Centre for Social Impact Awards Committee. 

M. & R. Montgomery Scholarship in Commerce

Established in March 2015 by The Honourable Robert A. F. Montgomery, Arts'50, Com'51, and his wife Margaret Montgomery and awarded on the basis of academic excellence, and demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities or community service, to students entering fourth year in the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business. Applicants are to submit a letter of application, with attached resume to the Smith School of Business by 30 September. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the Smith School of Business.

Thomas Nugent Memorial Award

Established in March 2003 by family and friends in memory of Thomas Nugent, B.Com. 2000, and awarded to an undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business on the basis of demonstrated entrepreneurial endeavours or student volunteer activities on campus or in the community. Academic achievement will also be considered. Application by letter, with attached resume, should be submitted to the Smith School of Business by 30 September.

PwC Diversity and Inclusion Scholarship

Established in January 2020 by PwC and awarded on the basis of academic excellence and contributions to school or community activities that promote equity, diversity and inclusion to students in second year of a Commerce degree program in the Smith School of Business. Preference will be given to students who have had exposure to an accounting-type business or initiative, or who demonstrate strong interest in accounting. A letter of application with attached resume is to be submitted by 1 February for selection by the Awards Committee in the Smith School of Business. Recipients will also be invited to apply for a paid summer internship experience, for a period of 12-16 weeks at PwC.  Acceptance of employment is not a condition of this award.

Marion Edith Dubin Memorial Scholarship in English Composition

Established in memory of Marion Edith Dubin (nee Hamilton) and awarded to a student who might not otherwise have the opportunity to study at the School of English. Awarded on the basis of an English composition. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of The School of English. Application is by specified English composition and application form submitted to the School of English by 18 November.

Queen's School of English 75th Anniversary Award

Established in November 2017 by the Queen's School of English to celebrate their 75th Anniversary. Awarded to students enrolled in the Canadian Academic English Experience Program on the basis of an English composition. Selection will be made by the Awards Committee of the School of English. Application is by specified English composition and application form submitted to the Queen's School of English in July of each year.
