Application Required

As a Queen's University student you have a number of exciting opportunities to expand your educational experience by participating in a Queen's Formal Exchange at another educational institution, either in Canada or in another country, or by studying at Bader College located in East Sussex, England. For more information regarding a Queen's Formal Exchange/study abroad experience, please contact your faculty office

The following programs are designed to supplement, not replace, student and family resources in financing your studies on either a Queen's Formal Exchange or at Bader College.

As a Queen’s student, you have lots of options for financial aid, including options that do not require an application.

Bader College

Choosing to study for a term or year at Bader College can be a major financial undertaking for many students and their families. Queen’s University is committed to making the unique and enriching Bader College experience accessible to all qualified students.

In addition to your own savings, parental/family contributions, government financial aid, and/or a student line of credit, you may wish to consider applying for awards and bursaries to finance your studies.

First-Year Tricolour Bursary

In addition to the admission scholarships open to all future students, the Tricolour Bursary is open to incoming Queen’s students who chose to undertake their first year of studies at Bader College. 

  • You must be a citizen/permanent resident of Canada for consideration of all admission bursaries, including the Tricolour Bursary

To be considered for a Tricolour Bursary, students must submit an Admission Bursary application.

  • By indicating that you will be participating in the First Year Program at Bader College on the Admission Bursary application, you will be automatically considered for the Tricolour Bursary
  • The application can be submitted as soon as you apply to Queen’s and no later than the deadline posted on the Admission Bursary application

Admission Bursary application

Students who have applied for the Bader College First Year Program through a Canadian University Study Abroad Program (CUSAP) partner university (Dalhousie University, Huron University College at Western, University of Victoria) should contact their home university’s financial aid office.


Upper-Year Bader College Bursary

Awards and bursaries are available to students who choose to attend Bader College in their second or subsequent year of study.

As part of the assessment for a Queen’s Bader College Bursary, there is an emphasis on assisting those students who have and continue to demonstrate need over and above the maximum funding available through government student financial aid. All domestic students (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) will be required to apply for government student financial aid to be considered for Bader College bursary assistance.

Bader College Bursary Application

Students should submit a Bader College Upper-Year Bursary application at the same time as applying for the Bader College. Students will be informed of the bursary decision at approximately the time they are offered admission to the program. Applications must be submitted to the Queen’s Financial Aid and Awards.

  • Applications will be accepted until prior to the student’s departure, on a first come first serve basis.

Students from institutions other than Queen’s should also contact their home university’s financial aid office for other possible sources of funding. 

  • When applying for the Bader College Upper-Year Bursary, please also include a Notice of Assessment detailing your current year student government financial aid

By submitting a Bader College Upper-Year Bursary application, students will be automatically considered for the named Bader College bursaries.

The following bursaries and awards have been made available thanks to the generosity of Queen’s donors.

If a student is selected to receive a Bader College Bursary the name of their bursary may be amended to one of the following awards. There are no separate applications for any of the named Bader College bursaries. Only the name of the award will change after a student has been selected; the value of their Bader College Bursary assistance will not change depending on the name of the award.

Bader College Bursaries Open to All Students

Alfred Bader International Study Award

Established by Alfred Bader and awarded on the basis of academic merit and financial need to student(s) for study at the Bader International Study Centre.

Claire L. Leggett International Study Award

Established by Claire Leggett and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate students studying on a formal Queen’s Exchange or studying at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC). Students studying at the Bader International Study Centre apply on the BISC Bursary application form and submit to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards).

John Greer Nicholson BISC Award

Awarded on the basis of financial need to a student studying at the Bader International Study Centre.

Kathleen Ryan Bader International Study Centre Award

Established by a bequest from Kathleen Ryan, B.A. 1926, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to upper-year students for study at the Bader International Study Centre.

Kathleen Ryan First Year Program Award

Awarded to Queen’s University students who participate in the First-Year Study Program at the Bader International Study Centre. The award is based on financial need, excellent academic ability, and involvement in high school and/or community activities. Ten awards are available.

Bader International Study Centre Bursary

Awarded on the basis of financial need to students studying at the Bader International Study Centre.

Blakely Family International Study Award

Established by Robert Blakely, LL.B. 1973 and Cindy Blakely. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to two upper-year, full-time undergraduate students in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Preference is given to students in the Department of Sociology. One award will be directed to a student studying at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC) and students apply on the BISC bursary application form available from Financial Aid and Awards. The second award will be directed to a student participating in a Queen's official exchange program and students complete the "Exchange Bursary" application form available from Financial Aid and Awards and submit the form to the International Programs Office along with the application for exchange.

Commerce 2009 Award in Memory of Baha Bekenov

The terms for this award are cross listed with named Exchange Bursaries, School of Business.

Note: To be considered for this award students must submit either an Exchange Bursary application or a Bader College Bursary application depending on their situation.

Stephen Csatari Memorial Award

Established in October 2002 by family, friends and fellow students in memory of Stephen Csatari a third year honours History student at the International Study Centre in 2002, who died suddenly of a rare and undetected heart defect, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to upper year students in the Faculty of Arts and Science, with a major or medial in History, who are enrolled in History courses at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC). If there are no eligible candidates, the award could be granted to students in any program at the BISC.

Donald C. and Cornelia N. Elliott Award

Established by Donald C. Elliott and Cornelia N. Elliott. Donald C. Elliott was a member of the Board of Trustees of Queen's University from 1985 to 2000, and Chairman of the Board from 1995 to 2000. Awarded to any student in any year in any program on the basis of financial need and academic excellence. Preference will be given to (1) student enrolled at the Bader International Study Centre or any comparable successor program, or, if there are no eligible students to (2) students in the departments of Fine Art and Music.

Roxy Denniston-Stewart Memorial Bursary

Established in November 2019 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory of Roxy Denniston-Stewart. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students who have been selected to attend the Bader International Study Centre. 

International Study Award

Awarded on the basis of financial need to students studying at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC). Application should be made on the BISC Bursary Application form and should be submitted to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards).

Franklin G. T. Pickard Memorial International Award

Established by Audrey Pickard, Barbara Pickard and Beverly Pickard in memory of Franklin G.T. Pickard, B.A. 1957, Honorary Doctor of Business Administration, Laurentian University, 1996, for his forty years of active support and promotion of Queen's University. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to enable Queen's students to participate in a period of study at the Bader International Study Centre.

Donna G Young Sexsmith International Studies Award

Established in March 2019 by Estate of Donna G. Young-Sexsmith, BA 1943, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need, to upper-year students who have been selected to attend the Bader International Study Centre. Preference will be given to students demonstrating academic excellence.

Sutton International Study Award

The terms for this award are cross listed with named Exchange Bursaries, School of Business.

Note: To be considered for this award students must submit either an Exchange Bursary application or a BISC Bursary application depending on their situation.

Allan R. Taylor International Study Award

Established in February 1996 in honour of Allan R. Taylor. Last revised in October 2023. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year who have been selected to attend Bader College. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards. 

Vice-Provost BISC Bursary

Established in May 2018 by Dr. Hugh Horton (Vice Provost and Executive Director) and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students who have been selected to attend the Bader International Study Centre. Preference will be given to upper-year students.

BISC International Award

Established by Queen’s University and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic merit to Queen’s students studying at the Bader International Study Centre. For Queen’s students enrolled in the Bader International Study Centre – First-Year Program.

Arts and Science-Specific Awards

Harold and Helen Cave Scholarship

Established by a bequest from the estate of Professor Harold M. Cave of Queen's University who, together with his wife, Helen, studied in the Department of Art during their post-retirement years. Awarded to a Queen's art history student with high academic standing in the previous year who is enrolled in an art history course at the Bader International Study Centre which will count toward his/her program. If no suitable candidate is identified, the scholarship will be awarded to a similarly qualified Queen's student taking a course in the Queen's Venice Summer School. Submit a letter of application to the undergraduate chair in the Department of Art prior to the term of study at the BISC. Awarded in the fall or winter term.

Upper-Year Students from Dalhousie University

Bader International Study Centre Award - Dalhousie University

Established in April 2014 by Alfred and Isabel Bader and awarded on the basis of demonstrated leadership, academic achievement and with consideration to financial need to upper-year students from Dalhousie University in any program of study who have been selected to attend the Bader International Study Centre. Applicants for the award will be nominated by Dalhousie University when recommending applicants for admission to the BISC. Final selection and approval of nominations from Dalhousie University will be made by the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards as delegated by the Senate Committee on Scholarships and Student Aid.

Exchange

Recognizing the value of a study abroad experience, Queen's has established a number of aid options to assist students with financial need who would like to participate in a Queen's Formal Exchange.

  • Students who are participating in a Study Abroad on a Letter of Permission are not eligible to hold scholarships, defer scholarships, or apply for bursary assistance for the period they are studying at another institution
  • Students are not normally eligible to receive funding from the visiting institution. However, students participating in a Queen's Bi-lateral Formal Exchange are eligible to hold scholarships and apply for bursary assistance for the period of their formal exchange

Queen's students participating on an exchange may also apply for a Queen's General Bursary, however, if you are already receiving the Exchange Bursary, your General Bursary assistance will be minimal.

Criteria

As part of the assessment for a Queen's Exchange Study bursary, there is an emphasis on assisting those students who have and continue to demonstrate need over and above the maximum funding available through government student financial aid.

All domestic students (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) are required to apply and qualify for a minimum amount of government student financial aid to be eligible for exchange bursary assistance. 

  • If you apply and qualify for student government assistance after your student exchange bursary has been assessed, you can contact us at financialaid@queensu.ca once you have your government student loan entitlement for the next academic year (generally in late summer or September) and Financial Aid and Awards will reassess your exchange bursary application at that time

Your Exchange Bursary application is assessed on the basis of financial need for the full cost of attendance in the fall/winter academic year.

  • When reviewing your exchange bursary application, we take into account your total expenses (tuition, books and supplies, cost of living, flight cost) and total student resources for the full academic year

Value

If you are eligible for bursary assistance, the value of the Exchange Bursary will include assistance for your fall term on exchange and winter term at Queen’s, or if you are on a full year exchange, it will be for fall and winter term.


Notification

Students will be informed of the bursary decision using their @Queen’s email address at the time they are offered an exchange program by their faculty. Late applications will be assessed within 2-3 weeks.

If you wish to be considered for assistance, please submit the Exchange Study Bursary application to Financial Aid and Awards. Only students participating in a Queen’s Formal Exchange are eligible to apply for this program.

Exchange Bursaries Open to All Students

Bursary for Studies in Africa

Established from some of the contributions made by students to the discontinued South African Education Trust Fund and awarded on the basis of financial need to Queen's students planning to study in Sub-Saharan Africa on a study abroad program. Please complete an Exchange Study Bursary application. Please attach letter of application, outlining the reasons for wanting to study in Africa, should be forwarded to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) at least two months prior to the beginning of the study term. Selection of the candidate will be made by a committee which includes the Director of the International Centre and a representative from Financial Aid and Awards.

Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem Award

Established by the Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University (CFHU) and awarded on the basis of financial need to undergraduate and graduate students who have been accepted during the fall, winter or spring/summer session at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem for courses recognized for credit at Queen's University. Students may participate in courses offered at the Rothberg International School, the regular Hebrew University curriculum, other accredited Hebrew University programs, or any accredited study abroad program between Queen's University and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Application should be made to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 31 March.

Exchange Study Bursary

Awarded on the basis of financial need to students who participate in an official international exchange. Students should complete the "Exchange Bursary" application.

Perry J. Lao International Exchange Award

Established in May 2007 by the friends and family of Perry Jason Lao to honour his passion for traveling and life-long learning. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to students who are participating in an official international bi-lateral exchange program. 

Claire L. Leggett International Study Award

Established by Claire Leggett and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate students studying on a formal Queen's Exchange or studying at the Bader International Study Centre (BISC). Students studying at the Bader International Study Centre apply on the BISC Bursary application form and submit to the Office of the University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards).

Leiden University Awards

Established by Marianne van Silfhout, alumna of Leiden University in the Netherlands, and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to students who wish to participate in an exchange program, or wish to pursue their studies or do research, at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Application should be made to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) at least two months prior to the beginning of the study period.

Bruce H. Mitchell International Exchange Award

Established by Bruce H. Mitchell, B.Sc. '68, and awarded on the basis of high academic achievement and financial need to full-time undergraduate students in any faculty of school at Queen's University who wish to study abroad and in doing so experience other learning environments and cultures. The award will provide support for students to attend any university worldwide where Queen's has established a formal exchange agreement. Preference will be given to students wishing to study outside North America. Students should complete the "Exchange Bursary" application.

Kathleen Ryan International Exchange Bursary

Established by a bequest from Kathleen Ryan, B.A. 1926, and awarded on the basis of financial need to students who participate in an official international exchange. Students should complete the "Exchange Bursary" application.

Honourable Dr. David J. Saul International Exchange Awards

Established in October 2003 by David J. Saul, B.A. '69, former Premier and Minister of Finance of Bermuda, and awarded on the basis of financial need and high academic achievement to full-time undergraduate students in any Faculty or School at Queen's University who wish to study abroad and in doing so experience other learning environments and cultures. The award will provide support for students to attend any university worldwide where Queen's has established a formal exchange agreement. Preference will be given to students wishing to study outside North America. Students should complete the "Exchange Bursary" application.

Wong International Bursary

Established in March 2007 by John W. Wong, Meds 1959, and Lily Y. Wong in honour of Dr. Min Sam Wong and Lau Yee Fern of Hong Kong. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year participating in an international study opportunity in China that is endorsed by the student's Faculty/School.


Arts and Science Specific Exchange Bursaries

Arts '70 Study Abroad Award

Established by the class of Arts '70 and awarded on the basis of merit and financial need to a student currently enrolled in the Faculty of Arts and Science who has been selected to take part in an official exchange program abroad. Selection will be made by the Director of the International Centre, the Faculty Dean and a representative from Financial Aid and Awards. Students should complete the "Exchange Bursary" application and must be submitted by 15 January.

Blakely Family International Study Award

The terms for this award are cross listed with named Bader College Exchange Bursaries.

Note: To be considered for this award students must submit either an Exchange Bursary application or a BISC Bursary application depending on their situation.

Murray A. Cowie Awards for Study in Germany

Established in November 2003 by a bequest from the estate of Murray A. Cowie. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students with a major, medial or minor concentration in German, German Studies, or Business German, or a special field concentration in Language and Linguistics with a primary concentration in German, who either will spend the third year of a four-year program at a German-speaking University or will study at a German Language Summer School. Equal consideration will be given to students in each of the two categories. If there are no eligible recipients then the award may be granted to a student in third year with a concentration in German. Selection will be made in consultation with the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards. 

Doug and Nancy McFadden International Exchange Award

The terms for this award are cross listed with School of Business Specific Exchange Bursaries.

Juliet Milsome Award

Established in January 2013 by Juliet Milsome, B.A. 1977, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's University who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen’s University bi lateral exchange in the United Kingdom. 

M. R. Parrish and M. A. (Henry) Parrish and Family Award

Established by A. Ralph Parrish in memory of his parents, M.R. Parrish and M.A.(Henry) Parrish, and awarded to full-time students in the Faculty of Arts and Science or Smith Engineering on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in extracurricular activities, preferably volunteer work for humanitarian causes. Preference will be given to students participating in a Queen's University international exchange or studying at Bader College. Application should be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by January 18.

Dr. Claude H. Vipond Award

Established by Dr. Jayant Lele to celebrate the contributions of his father-in-law, Dr. Claude Hibbert Vipond (Meds '44) to International Development, as a physician in Malaysia, Malawi, Tanzania and Haiti. Awarded on the basis of financial need and academic excellence to a student who has completed the third year of the Development Studies Program, to facilitate participation in the work-study placement program (DEVS 410). Application, on a General Bursary form, should be made to the Associate University Registrar (Financial Aid and Awards) by 1 February. Application must include a letter outlining the details of the proposed placement and a statement of support from the host organization. Selection will be made in consultation with the Coordinator of the Development Studies Program.


School of Business Specific Exchange Bursaries

Matt Aaronson and Kate Sanderson Exchange Bursary 

Established in November 2021 by Matt Aaronson, BA’98, BCom’98 and Kate Sanderson, BA’98 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree program in the Smith School of Business who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen’s University bi-lateral exchange.  

Edgar J. Benson/Dr. Clifford A. Curtis Bursary

Established in honour of The Honourable Edgar J. Benson, P.C., B.Com. '49, LL.B (R.M.C.)'73, and Dr. Clifford A. Curtis, B.A. (Toronto), Ph.D., Econ, (Chicago). Awarded to undergraduate students in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to participate in the program of the School which may include a period of study abroad. Special consideration will be given to students from the Greater Kingston Area.

Lawrence P. Cannon Family Award

Established in January 2016 and revised in June 2018 by Lawrence P. Cannon, BCom 1987, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange. Preference will be given to students from the province of Quebec.

Carnelos-Bamji Memorial Bursary

Established by Annamaria and Perry Bamji in memory of their parents who supported and encouraged international relationships. Awarded on the basis of financial need to an undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business who has been accepted to participate in an official exchange. Applicants must submit a one-page essay indicating how overseas travel and participation in an exchange program will expand their horizons and prepare them for work in global markets. Selection will be made in consultation with Financial Aid and Awards.

Chubb Insurance Company Bursary

Established by Chubb Insurance Company of Canada and awarded on the basis of financial need to a Bachelor of Commerce student who has been selected to participate in an official exchange. Applicants must submit a 500 word, double spaced essay on an insurance-related topic. A summer internship in Canada may be offered by Chubb Insurance starting the beginning of May following a fall or winter term exchange. Selection will be made in consultation with the Smith School of Business and Chubb Insurance Company of Canada.

Commerce '66 Bursary

Established by Commerce '66 on the occasion of their 30th reunion in 1996. Awarded to an undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to fully participate in the program of the School which may include a period of study abroad.

Commerce '72 Award

Established in May 2001 by Commerce '72 on the occasion of their 25th reunion in 1997. Awarded to an undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to fully participate in the program of the School, which may include a period of study abroad.

Commerce 1974 Exchange Bursary

Established in October 2014 by the Class of Commerce 1974 in celebration of their 40th reunion in 2014.  Revised in September 2018 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in third or fourth year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange.

Deloitte Global Development Award

Established in December 2013 by the Deloitte Foundation and Deloitte LLP employees. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need to students in the third-year of the Bachelor of Commerce program who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange. Preference will be given to students demonstrating school/community involvement and leadership skills.

Deloitte Global Exchange Award

Established in December 1997 and revised in September 2017 by Deloitte LLP. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need to students in the third-year of the Bachelor of Commerce program who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi lateral exchange.  Preference will be given to students demonstrating school/community involvement and leadership skills.

Exshaw Family International Exchange Bursary

Established in March 2017 by Christian and Florence Exshaw and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to a student in the Bachelor of Commerce Program in the Smith School of Business at Queen's University who has been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange in Asia or South America. Candidates must not have lived in the region in which they will be studying.

KPMG Exchange Award

Established in September 2018 by The KPMG Foundation. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and demonstrated financial need to students in any year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated interest in accounting, proven leaderships skills and involvement in school or community activities.

Masani Scholarship

Established by Dr. and Mrs. P. J. Bamji, in memory of their grandparents Jamshedji and Dhunmai Masani. Awarded to a Commerce undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business who exemplified the empathetic values closely held by Jamshedji and Dhunmai through involvement in one of the following: Service to the community within Queen's University and elsewhere, entrepreneurship or leadership in promoting small business. This scholarship is designated for a student with a high academic standing, who is desirous of going to another country on an International Exchange program, and who has proven evidence of some of the above values.

Elizabeth A. MacMaster Award

Established in May 2001 in honour of Mrs. Elizabeth A. MacMaster by her daughter, Lee Ann MacMaster Boyd, B.Com '84, and awarded to an undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to fully participate in the program of the School, which may include a period of study abroad. Preference will be given to a student from the Kingston region.

Douglas and Deborah McCutcheon Award

Established in January 2013 by Douglas McCutcheon, BCom 1987, and Deborah McCutcheon, BSc(Hons) 1986, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to Canadian citizens or Permanent residents who are students in any year of the Bachelor of Commerce Program, Smith School of Business, who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange to a destination outside of North America.

Doug and Nancy McFadden International Exchange Award

Established in October 2006 and last revised in September 2018 by Doug, LL.B.1975, and Nancy McFadden, B.A.(Hons.) 1974, B.Ed. 1976, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need and academic achievement to students in any year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business and to students in any year of a degree program in the Faculty of Arts and Science who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's bi lateral exchange.

Mirzaagha Family Exchange Bursary

Established in March 2019 by Vafa Mirzaagha, BCom 2006, and Varqa Mirzaagha, BCom 2006, and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in third year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business, who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange.

Nissan Commerce International Exchange Award

Established in September 2006 by Nissan Canada Inc. and awarded on the basis of financial need and academic achievement to students in the third year of the Bachelor of Commerce program, who are participating in an international exchange program.  Preference will be given to visible minority or Indigenous students.

PwC International Awards

Awarded on the basis of financial need and on a combination of strong foreign language skills and interpersonal qualities to full time undergraduate students in the Smith School of Business. Preference will be given to students with an interest in a career in accounting. The purpose of the award is to allow the student(s) to fully participate in an international study program. Selection will be made in consultation with Financial Aid and Awards.

Scotiabank Commerce Student Awards

Established by the Bank of Nova Scotia and awarded to undergraduate students in the Commerce program on the basis of financial need. Preference will be given to students participating in an official exchange program.

Scotiabank Group Scholarship of the Americas

Established in October 2006 by the Scotiabank Group and awarded on the basis of academic excellence and leadership qualities to (i) students in the Smith School of Business who are participating in an official university bi-lateral exchange with a recognized exchange partner in Central America or South America, or (ii) international students at a recognized exchange partner to come to the Smith School of Business on an official bi-lateral exchange, based on the same criteria. The duration of the exchange will be for a minimum of one term (4 months). Selection will be made by the Smith School of Business Awards Selection Committee, the Centre for International Management and in consultation with the partnering institutions.

Scotiabank/Queen's University Leadership Awards

Established by Scotiabank and Queen's University in recognition of the Bank's commitment to providing students with the tools necessary to make the school to work transition a natural one. Awarded to full-time undergraduate students in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need, good academic standing, and demonstrated leadership abilities. Preference will be given to students going on an official international exchange program. Application should be made to Financial Aid and Awards by 15 January and selection will be made in consultation with the Smith School of Business.

Sculthorpe Family International Commerce Award

Established in April 2008 by David Sculthorpe, B.Com. 1983, and Patricia Sculthorpe, B.A. (Hons.) 1985, and awarded to undergraduate students in the Smith School of Business to participate in a formal Queen's bi-lateral exchange. The award will be based on demonstrated financial need, a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrated leadership in extra-curricular activities and/or community service.

Smith School of Business Bursary

Established by alumni and friends of the School of Business and awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to fully participate in the program of the School which may include a period of study abroad.

Richard G. Stackhouse International Awards

Established by Richard G. Stackhouse, Commerce '53. Awarded to undergraduate students in the School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to fully participate in the program of the School with preference given to a period of study abroad.

Sutton International Study Award

Established in December 1997 and revised in February 2015 by Gerald D. Sutton, B.Com. 1948. M.Com. 1949, and Margaret (Scally) Sutton, B.A.(Hon.) 1948, in order to foster a greater understanding of global issues. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to undergraduate or graduate students in enrolled in the Smith School of Business to enable study abroad. In the case of a graduate student, the funds are available for research study abroad. In the case of undergraduate students, funds are available to students who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange or attend the Bader International Study Centre (BISC).  Undergraduate students going on exchange should submit an Exchange Study Bursary application to Financial Aid and Awards by 15 January. Undergraduate students studying at the BISC should submit a BISC Bursary application prior to the appropriate term of study. Graduate students should submit an exchange bursary application prior to the appropriate term of study.

John Wakulat Family International Award

Established by the John Wakulat family. Awarded to an undergraduate student in the Smith School of Business on the basis of financial need and academic excellence in order for them to fully participate in an international exchange program in Germany.


Engineering and Applied Science Specific Exchange Bursaries

M. R. Parrish and M. A. (Henry) Parrish and Family Award

Established by A. Ralph Parrish in memory of his parents, M.R. Parrish and M.A.(Henry) Parrish, and awarded to full-time students in the Faculty of Arts and Science or Smith Engineering on the basis of financial need, academic achievement, and involvement in extracurricular activities, preferably volunteer work for humanitarian causes. Preference will be given to students participating in a Queen's University international exchange or studying at Bader College. Application should be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards by January 18.

Scholarships have been established to assist students participating on a Queen’s Formal Exchange. These scholarships are not based on financial need, unlike the Exchange Study Bursary. Only students participating in a Queen’s Formal Exchange are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Killam Fellowship Program (for study in the United States)

This award is for third year undergraduate students studying in the United States. The Killam Fellowship application must be submitted to the International Programs Office. Please check the Killam Fellowship website for further information, including the application deadline.

Canadian Robert T. Jones, Jr. Scholarship (for study at St. Andrews)

This award is for students studying for a full academic year at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. A selection committee will adjudicate the applications and will, in cooperation with the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Robert T. Jones, Jr. Scholarship Foundation, select the recipients. Applications must be submitted to the International Programs Office.

Global Skills Opportunity Award 

Established in March 2022 by Queen's University with funding from the Global Skills Opportunity Program.  Awarded to students in the JD program in the Faculty of Law or undergraduate degree programs in any Faculty or School at Queen's University, for tuition fees, living and travel related expenses associated with an approved international study experience funded by the Momentum for Mobility: Global Pathways for Inclusion program.  Application information will be available on the International Programs Office website: www.queenusu.ca/ipo. Selection will be made by the International Programs Office in consultation with the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards where applicable.

Arts and Science Specific Awards

Canadian Learning Initiative in China Travel Award

Established in November 2016 and revised in March 2017 by Queen's University and awarded to assist students in any year of any Faculty or School in a degree program at Queen's University with travel related expenditures associated with a study abroad experience to a university in China. Applications are to be made to the Queen's University International Programs Office, and selection of applicants will be made by each Faculty or School.

Canadian Robert T. Jones, Jr. Scholarship

Established by the Canadian Robert T. Jones, Jr. Scholarship Foundation and awarded to students participating in the exchange between the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and Queen's University at Kingston. Eight scholarships are awarded; four to incoming students from St. Andrews and four to outgoing students from Queen's University. Applicants to the St. Andrews exchange must write an essay outlining their knowledge of the life of Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. Applications are available from your Faculty Office.

French Exchange Scholarship

Awarded to a student from France visiting Queen's University as part of an exchange agreement between the French Consulate and Queen's University. Queen's commitment provides full tuition, fees and UHIP plus a living allowance.

Colette Tonge Bursary

Established in honour of Professor Colette Tonge on the occasion of her retirement on June 30, 1991 from the Department of French Studies. Awarded to a student(s) entering third year to assist in defraying expenses associated with studying at a French-speaking university in Canada or abroad. Application should be made to the Department of French Studies by March 1.

Venice Program Bursary

Established in March 1990 and awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to Queen's students in any year who are taking Art History courses offered through the Venice Summer School program. Apply for funding for the Venice Summer School Program through the Exchange Study Bursary Application.

Alexander and Ian Vorres Hellenic Travel Bursary

Established in September 1987 by Ian Vorres, B.A. 1950, and awarded to an upper year undergraduate or a graduate student, on the basis of demonstrated financial need, academic achievement, and a written proposal, who is intending (in order of priority): 1) To pursue original work (a thesis or other project) in Greece on a subject related to Greece of any historical period, in philology, archaeology, history, or philosophy; or 2) To participate in a summer session or excavation in Greece sponsored by the Canadian Archaeological Institute in Athens, The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, or other approved institutions; or 3) To attend a program at The American School of Classical Studies at Athens, The College Year in Athens, or other approved institution. Applicants should complete a bursary application form available from the department, submit a letter of application with C.V. and project description, along with the names of two referees to the Department of Classics. Selection will be made in consultation with Financial Aid and Awards. Application deadline: 31 March.

Emil Nenniger International Exchange Scholarship in Chemical Engineering

Established in April 2004 by Dr. Emil Nenniger, B.Sc. '50, and awarded on the basis of academic excellence to a student entering third year in the Department of Chemical Engineering or Engineering Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, who has been selected to participate in an official exchange program at a location outside Canada. A letter of application must be submitted to the Head of Chemical Engineering by 1 March. Selection will be made by the Departmental Scholarship Committee.


School of Business Specific Awards

Big Sky Fund by Michael G Sifton and Family

Established in January 2012 by Michael Sifton, B.Com. 1983, and Julie Sifton, B.A. 1982. This award will be actively promoted to all eligible students in the B.Com. program. Awarded on the basis of academic achievement, proven leadership skills, and involvement in school or community activities to out-bound exchange students in any year of the Bachelor of Commerce program in the Smith School of Business, who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen's University bi-lateral exchange program. Applications are to be made to the Commerce Office. Selections will be coordinated by the Centre for International Management with delegates from the Commerce program office.

Lisa Saunders Exchange Award

Established in April 2024 by Lisa Saunders (Faulkner), BCom'86. Awarded on the basis of demonstrated financial need to students in any year of the Bachelor of Commerce degree program in Smith School of Business who have been selected to participate in a formal Queen’s University bi-lateral exchange. Applications are to be made to the Office of the University Registrar, Financial Aid and Awards. 

 

Renewable Scholarships

If you are participating in a formal, bi-lateral Queen's exchange or if you are studying at Bader College, your renewable scholarship is retained

  • If you are studying at Bader College the renewal average will be calculated on your average achieved while at Bader College
  • If you are studying on exchange for a full year (fall and winter) you must successfully complete the equivalent of a Queen's full-time course load
  • If you are studying on exchange for one term (fall or winter) your renewal will be based on successfully completing the equivalent of a Queen's full-time course load in that term plus achieving the required average during the term of study at Queen's
