Social Insurance Number (SIN)

The SIN is a nine digit number that you need to work in Canada. Without it, Queen's University cannot pay you.

You must have valid immigration status in Canada to apply for a SIN.

There is no fee for the SIN.

Application Instructions

Apply in person

  • Make an appointment at Kingston's Service Canada Centre in advance using the contact details on their website.
  • You do not need to complete a form before applying for the SIN, but before going to the Service Canada office for your appointment, read the application information.
  • Assemble your supporting documents for proof of identity.

If your documentation is in order, you'll get a Social Insurance Number on the spot.

You will receive a "Confirmation of SIN" letter to show to your employer. Keep this letter in a safe place.

Apply online

You can also access the Service Canada website to apply for a SIN online. You do not receive the SIN immediately after applying so if you have an urgent need, it is recommended that you make an appointment to apply in person at the Kingston Service Canada Centre.

  • Upload your documents.
  • If eligible, once your application has been processed, view your SIN online.

If your SIN has Expired

  • If your SIN starts with a 9 it will have an expiry date. There is no cost for a new SIN.
  • Queen's can only pay you if a valid SIN is on file.
  • You must re-apply with a new work permit.
  • Please provide your new work permit and SIN to the Human Resources Department so your pay is not interrupted.
