When:
Thursday, November 16, 2023
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The series continues with a workshop hosted by the artist and filmmaker Ephraim Asili, whose filmmaking practice engages with the different facets of the African diaspora – and his own place within it. His documentaries explore the interconnected nature of politics, aesthetics and activism.

Workshop: Documentary, Diaspora & the Archive
Drop in, registration isn’t required. Free and open to all.

This workshop gives participants an opportunity to engage with the documentary filmmaking practice of Ephraim Asili. Often inspired by his day-to-day wanderings, Asili creates art that situates itself as a series of meditations on the every day and the fragmented cultural identities that coalesce in today’s world. Asili’s films put forward a strong statement on the history and evolution of Black activism that are both formally and politically innovative. This workshop will give shape to Asili’s creative process, with a focus on the use of archival materials in his work. It is the intention of the workshop to allow participants to learn about process, practice and form in a collaborative way with the artist. Ephraim Asili is an African-American artist, filmmaker, writer, activist, DJ and traveler whose work focuses on the African diaspora as a cultural force.

Co-curated by Brandon Hocura and Hilary Jay

Ephraim Asili’s visit is in collaboration with the Department of Film & Media at Queen’s University and made possible by the Chancellor Dunning Trust Visitorship.

"The Antonym of Forgetting: Memory and Justice in Eastern Europe"

Abstract:

The great scholar Yosef Yerushalmi once asked: “Is it possible that the antonym of ‘forgetting’ is not ‘remembering,’ but justice?” Today, we might add a few corollaries to this line of questioning: How to end the cycle of vengeance? How are we to protect memory while also shielding it from manipulation? When is it permissible to allow ourselves to begin to finally "move past the past"? Dr. Linda Kinstler will share how she has explored these questions through writing at the intersection of journalism, creative non-fiction, and academia.

Title: The financialization of student housing through the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond

Synopsis (from Dr. Revington): The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly impacted higher education as international student mobility was disrupted and teaching shifted to virtual formats. These impacts could be expected to affect the private purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) sector, an increasingly mainstream ‘global’ real estate asset class remaking university cities, yet dependent on students’ physical presence. Indeed, in the short term, firms saw share prices plummet and suspended dividend payments. However, as the pandemic wore on, they adopted strategies to sustain the financialization of PBSA through the crisis. Drawing on an analysis of documents produced by real estate consultancies and PBSA operators in Africa, Australia, Europe, and North America, I interrogate these strategies and their implications for university cities. Prevailing trends are likely to amplify uneven development, the privatization of student housing, and urban segregation beyond the pandemic. More generally, the case of PBSA demonstrates the remarkable resilience of financialization to unexpected, external market shocks.

Dr. Nick Revington is an Assistant Professor at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), with a focus on Urban Development, Housing, and Young Adults.

Abstract

Our research at the iStudio focuses on the intersection between Physical Computing and e-textiles in the area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Our suite of state-of-the-art equipment and digital fabrication machines support designing with, not only MakerSpace equipment (e.g., laser-cutting, 3D-printing/scanning, etc), but also cutting-edge digital embroidery/sewing, digital knitting, and digital weaving technology. I’ll present examples of our designs on embedded hardware and sensors as interactive everyday objects from shape-changing rugs and curtains, multitouch glass and textiles, to interactive furniture and garments. Our fully-functioning prototypes support real-world applications and qualitative user studies situated outside the lab and in people’s homes. These future smart objects can provide a large set of data for AI and machine learning models. In addition, we work on data physicalization using wearables and design soft actuators and sensors using smart textiles that can be integrated with robotics but with careful consideration of social and human factors to develop user friendly designs that fit in people’s lives. This design-based and material-led work is quite interdisciplinary and frequently intersects with robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
