When:
Monday, January 29, 2024
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre

Description:

Dr Tommy Mayberry might be one of the biggest fears of our contemporary cishet, Conservative, white, Western world: a drag queen doing critical race theory (CRT). More specifically, Dr Tommy is a raced-white academic drag queen doing critical race counterstory and teaching queer via their research, pedagogy, practice and leadership; and more specifically, “fears” and “phobias” might not be so much what is happening across these lands now known as North America.

Deep Looking: Who is Belle Island? (at Agnes!)

Deep Looking: Who is Belle Island? (at Agnes!)

When:
Saturday, January 27, 2024
1:15 PM – 2:00 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Take time to slow down and deeply observe works in the exhibition Who is Belle Island?. Guided by Agnes docents, this contemplation practice allows for relaxation and new insights.

At Deep Looking, we aim to facilitate conversations around artworks shaped by participants’ unique perspectives, rather than promoting a singular reading. We ask that participants come with a willingness to listen, share and collaborate.

Kingston artists, Billie Kearns (aka Billie the Kid) and Jill Glatt collaborate on an exhibition that asks, “what does it mean to be a local artist?” and “how can we honour the land with stories we tell?” They propose Belle Island is “a being who holds those who are both from this land and those who have come here from far away and live here now.” Agnes’s Atrium is adorned with sound and tapestries coloured with natural dye and embroidered with poetry and quotes from stories contributed by local community members.

The docent program is generously supported by the Lloyd Carr-Harris Foundation.

CELEBRATE THE FINAL EXHIBITIONS IN AGNES’S CURRENT FACILITY!

This season is Agnes’s love letter to Kingston. It is written as a constellation of solo exhibitions, commissions and interventions that rightfully celebrate and elevate the culture and artists of our hometown. Kingston artists are creatives and entrepreneurs, astute aestheticians and community activists alike.

All Agnes staff collaborated to choreograph this final season in our current facility, which has made its planning process particularly special: as an end and a new beginning. We are proud to share these artists’ sensibilities and their slow and steady commitment to transforming the culture of this city.

Refreshments are available with remarks around 6:30 pm. The dance party with Kingston-based DJ Kid Koncussion starts at 7:30 pm. Come and celebrate with us!
