Taskfoce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Webinar Series: Part 1

Taskfoce on Nature Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) Webinar Series: Part 1

When:
Tuesday, December 5, 2023
9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Where:
Description:

The biodiversity and natural assets that we all depend on to survive and thrive are under intense pressure. This creates serious risks for business, but also opportunities to invest in nature-positive outcomes.

The release of the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-Related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) in September 2023 was a major opportunity for firms to start to assess their impact on nature and reliance on natural assets, as many are already doing with climate.

Join ISF's expert panel, including Tony Goldner, Executive Director of TNFD, Romie Goedicke den Hertog, Co-Head of UNEP-FI and Ryan Riordan, Director of Research at ISF who will call in from COP28, for an update on global discussions about nature reporting, an assessment of the state of biodiversity and the need to move forward urgently, and a closer look at the development of the TNFD recommendations and how they can work for your organization.

Legal Ethics and the AI Revolution

AI has taken the world by storm over the last few years, with a pace that has been dramatically accelerating within the last year, as the ChatGPT phenomenon shows. What ethical and professional challenges does this bring for the legal profession, and for the legal education we should be providing? In particular, how can and should we navigate the many tensions between the need for proficiency in the use of the technology and the ethical issues raised, especially when the technology and its potential applications are rapidly changing?

QUEER REFUGEES IN QUEER UTOPIAS IN NORTHERN EUROPE: INCLUSION AND EXCLUSION

When:
Monday, November 20, 2023
3:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Where:
Mackintosh-Corry Hall
Room: D216
Find on Campus Map
Description:

This panel discusses findings from an Icelandic research project on the social experiences of people who flee persecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression (SOGIE) to Northern Europe and the Netherlands, both hailed for queer exceptionalism. Drawing on interviews and ethnographic fieldwork, the presenters discuss how SOGIE refugees navigate conflicting legal, social, and cultural discourses on gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity in Iceland and the Netherlands with some being deported back to Italy and Greece.

Employing theoretical perspectives of transnationalism, homonationalism, post-colonialism, bordering, critical race theory, and queer
of color critique, the panel argues that the transmigration of queerness potentially entails juggling different sexual and gender identities that afford different kinds of privileges and opportunities in different national and social contexts.

Dr.Árdís K. Ingvars is a lecturer in Disability Studies and Sociology at the University of Iceland.

Digital Humanities in Action: The Philae Temple Graffiti Project

Prof. Jitse H.F. Dijkstra, Department of Classics and Religious Studies, University of Ottawa

Classics may seem like a stuffy field, but in the last couple of decades the ‘digital turn’ has not failed to have its effect and digital tools have become common, especially at the intersection with archaeological fieldwork. In this lecture, Prof. Dijkstra will present the preliminary results of such a project that is advancing the study of ancient graffiti, the Philae Temple Graffiti Project. Philae, a famous temple island in southern Egypt, was one of the main sites for the cult of Isis in Graeco-Roman Egypt. Worshippers left thousands of textual and figural graffiti on the temple walls that provide us with a wealth of information about their personal piety. And yet, whereas the texts have mostly been studied, the figures have so far been completely ignored. The project fills this lacuna in scholarship by systematically recording and studying the figural graffiti. The lecture will highlight the use of advanced methods of recording and what they contribute to our knowledge of this temple site, and religion in Graeco-Roman Egypt more generally.
