Ingenuity Labs Presents: Jonathan Gammell, Stories of Measuring and Planning Motion in Robotics

Ingenuity Labs Presents: Jonathan Gammell, Stories of Measuring and Planning Motion in Robotics

When:
Thursday, November 9, 2023
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM
Where:
Mitchell Hall
Room: 395

Description:

Abstract

Autonomous robots are exciting when they can perform complex tasks in complex environments. To do this, they need to have the ability to both measure the world moving around them and plan their own motions through it. This talk will present an overview of my group's work on the problems of multimotion estimation and motion planning and our experience deploying autonomous robotics in the real world.

Biography

Jonathan Gammell is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Queen's University where he leads the Estimation, Search, and Planning (ESP) research group. He is also an Adjunct Fellow of the Oxford Robotics Institute at the University of Oxford where he was previously a Departmental Lecturer and taught at St. Peter's College, Oxford. He studied Mechanical Engineering and Physics at the University of Waterloo (BASc) and Robotics at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (MASc, PhD).

Description:

At the heart of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. Queen’s research is driving progress on many of the SDGs, with Queen’s recently ranked 3rd in the world and 1st in Canada and North America in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings, which assess how universities are advancing the UN SDGs within and beyond their local communities. This panel will bring together four researchers from different disciplines who are leading the way in addressing SDGs.

Presenters:
Benjamin Bolden (Faculty of Education)
Colleen Davison (Public Health Sciences)
Kevin de France (Chemical Engineering)
Warren Mabee (School of Policy Studies)

Moderator:
Heather Aldersey (School of Rehabilitation Therapy and Special Advisor to the Principal on UN SDGs)

IDPS Talk: Are confidence-building measures possible in an age of competition? with Dr. Joel Ng

IDPS Talk: Are confidence-building measures possible in an age of competition? with Dr. Joel Ng

When:
Wednesday, November 22, 2023
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM
Where:
Robert Sutherland Hall
Room: 334

Description:

hybrid event: In-Person or online

2022 was the bloodiest year for conflicts since 1994, the year of tragic genocides in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. 2023 looks unlikely to reverse the trend, while contending approaches to global order by rival powers mark divisions that seem increasingly insurmountable. The rise of ‘tit-for-tat’ measures since the initiation of the US trade war aimed at China has raised tensions and led to restructuring of domestic policies worldwide toward ‘resilience’ – a byword for anticipating conflict and the decreasing reliance on interdependence. Yet seen from a game-theoretic perspective, ‘tit-for-tat’ is a strategy that is not solely negative or hostile, but one that also contains its own solution, if positive actions can be reinforced. Confidence-building measures (CBMs) have been long considered a critical part of the security toolkit in the Indo-Pacific. Yet 30 years of their implementation have not seemed to have much effect as rivalries grow in the region. This seminar considers the prospects for rethinking CBMs as needs grow for addressing retaliatory actions and transactionalism in an age of competition.
