Prayers for Peace and Remembrance of the Victims of the Quebec City Mosque Shooting

Prayers for Peace and Remembrance of the Victims of the Quebec City Mosque Shooting

When:
Sunday, January 29, 2023
5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
Where:
Islamic Centre of Kingston (1477 Sydenham Road)
Find on Campus Map
Description:

On January 29, 2017, the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec City was subject to a tragic, hateful and Islamophobic crime. A gunman entered the place of worship and opened fire on the worshippers, killing Ibrahima Barry, Mamadou Tanou Barry, Khaled Belkacemi, Abdelkrim Hassan, Azzedine Soufiane and Aboubaker Thabti, and injuring many more. In 2021, the Federal Government declared January 29 as The National Day of Remembrance of the Québec City Mosque Attack and Action Against Islamophobia, which serves as a reminder of the work we must do as a nation to eradicate Islamophobia, hate and racism in Canada. In honour of the memory of the victims, in recognition of those who selflessly and courageously put themselves in harm’s way to protect others, and in solidarity with the survivors of this tragedy, we mark this day by inviting each and every Canadian to stand with us by joining the Green Square Campaign from January 23-29: wear a green square in solidarity with the six widows, 17 fatherless children, and all those suffering the consequence of this and other violent acts of Islamophobia.

On January 29, members of the interfaith community will join to share prayers to remember the victims at the Islamic Centre of Kingston (1477 Sydenham Road)It is hoped that following this event, attendees will go to City Hall together to view its illumination in green.

Join the Green Square Campaign: www.greensquarecampaign.ca Wear a green square. Join the letter writing campaign.

Book Launch for Distant Stage: Quebec, Brazil, and the Making of Canada's Cultural Diplomacy

Book Launch for Distant Stage: Quebec, Brazil, and the Making of Canada's Cultural Diplomacy

When:
Thursday, February 9, 2023
5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where:
The Broom Factory (305 Rideau Street, Kingston)
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Organized by the Department of History.

Please join Dr. Eric Fillion (Buchanan Postdoctoral Fellow in Canadian History, Department of History) for the launch of his new book, Distant Stage: Quebec, Brazil, and the Making of Canada’s Cultural Diplomacy (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2022) on Thursday, February 9 at 5:30 PM at the Broom Factory (305 Rideau Street, Kingston).

Distant Stage examines the neglected histories of Canada-Brazil relations and the role played by culture in Canada’s pursuit of an international identity.

Copies of Distant Stage will be available for purchase and refreshments will be served.

Eric Fillion is adjunct professor and Buchanan postdoctoral fellow in the Department of History at Queen’s University. His research explores the social and symbolic importance of music, within countercultures and in Canadian international relations. His ongoing work on cultural diplomacy and Canadian-Brazilian relations builds on the experience he has acquired as a musician playing drums with Montreal-based bands in various studios and on international stages. It also informs his current research on the postwar cultural public sphere: his two main projects examine the emergence of the music festival phenomenon in Canada and the entangled sonic histories of diasporic social movements.
