Well-managed research data is an international best practice and contributes to the reach and impact of research. Data management plans (DMPs) and data deposit are also increasingly required for funding applications or journal submissions. Queen’s has recently created an Institutional Research Data Management Strategy in response to the Tri-Agency’s RDM Policy released in March 2021. To support researchers in RDM best practices, the Library has an RDM Guide and also provides one-on-one or group consultations. This session will be led by the Data Services Coordinator at Queen’s Library, Alexandra Cooper, and cover key concepts and practices within RDM with the goal of familiarizing participants with what RDM is, what practices are encouraged or required within the institution and by the Tri-Council, and more.

Nationalism, Secessionism, and Autonomy” with André Lecours

André Lecours is a professor in the School of Political Studies at the University of Ottawa. His research interests are Canadian politics, European politics, nationalism, and federalism.  He is the author of Nationalism, Secessionism, and Autonomy (Oxford University Press, 2021).

The strength of secessionism in liberal-democracies varies in time and space. Inspired by historical institutionalism, Nationalism, Secessionism, and Autonomy argues that such variation is explained by the extent to which autonomy evolves in time. If autonomy adjusts to the changing identity, interests, and circumstances of an internal national community, nationalism is much less likely to be strongly secessionist than if autonomy is a final, unchangeable settlement. Developing a controlled comparison of, on the one hand, Catalonia and Scotland, where autonomy has been mostly static during key periods of time, and, on the other hand, Flanders and South Tyrol, where it has been dynamic, and also considering the Basque Country, Québec, and Puerto Rico as additional cases, this book puts forward an elegant theory of secessionism in liberal-democracies: dynamic autonomy staves off secessionism while static autonomy stimulates it.

Where:
Joseph S. Stauffer Library

Description:

The I@Q theme for 2023 is Misinformation: Rogue Inquiries. In today’s social media, news-on-demand driven world, misinformation is rampant. The spread of incorrect and misleading information by political and non-political players alike wreaks havoc on society’s ability to make informed, critical, evidence-based decisions. Misinformation and disinformation are so prevalent that the question needs to be asked whether it is in fact now the norm, while truth and facts are the rogue actors.

Are you an undergraduate student who has (individually or as part of a group) conducted research related in any way to misinformation or disinformation? Do you have an interesting, unique, or possibly rogue inquiry about its impact on life and society? As the problem-solving scholars of the next generation, we’d love to hear more about your research at the I@Q Conference.

Note: "Misinformation: Rogue Inquiries" may be the theme for the conference, but applicants are encouraged to submit research on any topic.

Roman Virtue, Violent Spectacle, and Gender in the Works of Petrarch

Petrarch (1304-1374) was obsessed with ancient Roman virtue. His writings are filled with the Stoic teachings and the stories of Roman heroes. My talk centers on Petrarch’s reception of Roman virtue in the works of Cicero, Livy, and Virgil. Gladiators, soldiers, and Rome’s great heroes were all models of masculine Stoic virtue in bravely accepting death, following orders, and suffering pain. Roman history and virtue are prominent themes in Petrarch’s letters, dialogues, and especially in his lengthy Latin epic, modeled on the Aeneid, the Africa, about the second Punic war, featuring Scipio, Hannibal, and the North African queen, Sofonisba. Petrarch appropriated, criticized, and recast these ancient stories to fit his Christian age. Petrarch not only wrote in Classical Latin but also applied the lessons of the ancients to the problems of his times.
