"Quality Control: Experiments on the Microfoundations of Retrospective Voting", with J. Scott Matthews

Thursday, February 16, 2023 | 2:30-4:00 PM

Robert Sutherland Hall Room 202

Light refreshments will be served!

J. Scott Matthews (Ph.D., UBC) is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Memorial University, where he studies elections, voting and public opinion in established democracies.

Abstract: Conventional models of voting behavior depict individuals who judge governments for how the world unfolds during their time in office. This phenomenon of retrospective voting requires that individuals integrate and appraise streams of performance information over time. Yet past experimental studies short-circuit this “integration-appraisal” process.  We develop a new framework for studying retrospective voting and present eleven experiments building on that framework.  Notably, when we allow integration and appraisal to unfold freely, we find little support for models of “blind retrospection.” Although we observe clear recency bias, we find respondents who are quick to appraise and who make reasonable use of information cues. The results highlight the importance of centering the integration-appraisal challenge in both theoretical models and experimental designs and begin to uncover the cognitive foundations of retrospective voting.

DAN School of Drama and Music Choral Music Concert. SO MUCH TO SEEK

DAN School of Drama and Music Choral Music Concert. SO MUCH TO SEEK

When:
Friday, February 3, 2023
7:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Where:
Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts
Room: Concert Hall
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Experience the choral ensembles of the DAN School of Drama & Music together with friends from the Kingston Chamber Choir in a spectacular concert of choral music. The DAN School will be welcoming the award-winning Filipino-American composer, conductor, and singer Matthew Lyon Hazzard to Queen’s University for a weeklong residency, culminating in this spotlight performance of his work. This performance will feature Matthew as a guest conductor on several pieces along with the choir’s resident conductor, Darrell Christie. Despite being only 33, Matthew’s award-winning work is praised for “exquisite text-setting” and for creating “stunning landscapes of sound,” that will fill the Isabel's Jennifer Velva Bernstein Performance Hall as 75 singers accompanied by string quartet and immersive projections bring his music to life. There’s even a choir of crystal glasses! Much of Matthew’s music is based around ideas of connection: connection to each other, connection to the land, connection to our past, and to our future. His refreshing approach to choral music explores what group singing can be in the twenty-first century, making this a performance not to miss!

Description:

Alright, Now What? Centring Gender Justice in the Pandemic Recovery

The pandemic has exposed hard truths about the state of gender and racial justice in Canada. It has also shaken decades of progress toward equality. But it also presents us with a unique opportunity. As we look to the future of Canada, we have the chance to reset normal and build toward a vision of intersectional gender justice that benefits everyone.

Paulette Senior, President and CEO of the Canadian Women's Foundation, will address key policy lessons learned during the pandemic and discuss how we can use these lessons to recover and "shock-proof' the country against future crises.
