FAS students clash in roundball rivalry

For the second year in a row, students in the Faculty of Arts and Science will take to the court to who are the best basketball players in the Faculty – Arts students or Science students.

Last year, the Science team won the game by only a few points but organizer and Arts student Christian Luchin says things will be a little different this year.

“Last year Science won by only a couple of points,” he says. “If you ask me an art student, we would have won in overtime. Arts isn't messing around this year, but Science will try to run it back. Both teams have much to prove and are excited to battle it again this year on the court. The rivalry is present right now and will be on game day.”

The new event, inspired by events run by Commerce and Engineering, was organized last year by Kristin Papaconstantinou and Monica Szalajko. The charity this year that the money will be donated to is Martha’s Table, a local charity whose mission is to provide a caring place where people in need can have access to a nutritious meal and find community social support.

“Martha's Table is a fantastic charity that has seriously impacted significant local issues,” Luchin says. “Their noble commitment to address the concerns of the less fortunate is genuinely touching. When I did my shift there, it was enlightening to see how much they care and do, all from the goodness of their heart and with smiles on their faces. Seeing their impact and grit firsthand was genuinely touching. Their excitement for the game has the players ready and motivated to give it their all come game day.”

The goal this year has always been to raise money for Martha's Table, but Luchin says they have focused on spreading awareness of Martha's Table and providing a platform for them to encourage others. One of the goals this year is hoping that everyone iat the game might reach out to do at least one shift or think of Martha's Table when looking for opportunities to make an impact in their community.

“The Art Sci Cup is an event that wishes to expand on this tradition and bring more opportunities to students to keep spirits high in the winter semester's final stretch and establish an impact on others, especially in the Kingston community,” says Luchin, adding that this year's cup wouldn't have been possible without a caring, passionate, creative, and disciplined student-led team, volunteers, and players.
