Sarah (University of Auckland)

In February of 2024, I flew nearly 20 hours from Toronto, Ontario to Auckland, New Zealand, the place I would call home for the next five months. I had no idea the profound impact it would have on me, and how many incredible things I was about to experience.

I am beyond grateful for my time on exchange in New Zealand, as it was truly one of the most unforgettable and transformative experiences of my life. I now have lifelong friends from all corners of the world and memories that I will cherish forever. It took time to adjust, but as I pushed myself to meet new people, try new activities, and explore the city and beyond, I discovered a newfound confidence and resilience. Each day brought something new and enriching, and the personal growth that comes with the experience is something I’ll carry with me forever.

I stayed in university accommodation in a five-person flat, with students from Ireland, Canada, New Zealand, and Hong Kong. The campus was beautiful, located in the heart of the city, but also near stunning parks and gardens. While on exchange, I got to travel to many places in and around Auckland, as well as other parts of New Zealand, Australia, and the Cook Islands. I experienced landscapes so stunning they felt like a postcard - rugged coastlines, pristine mountains, and beautiful cities. Each place offered something unique, furthering my appreciation
and understanding of the diversity and beauty of the world.

Not only did I thoroughly enjoy the social, cultural, and adventure aspects of my exchange semester, but I also appreciated the academic opportunities. It was very interesting to learn about pharmacology and other topics related to my life sciences degree from different perspectives. The professors and teaching team were engaging, passionate, and inspiring, and made me excited to learn every day. One course that really stuck out to me was the population health course I took. It delved into the basis of health promotion practices, both international and New Zealand-based. This course allowed me to learn about and better appreciate the Maori culture, the indigenous
people of New Zealand.

I can’t recommend New Zealand enough for students looking to go on exchange. It was everything I could have hoped for. Moving this far away from home can be intimidating, but the adventure, memories, and personal growth that come with it make it all worth it. Take the leap - you won’t regret it!
