China Projects Office

The School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) has extensive and ongoing research and training programs/projects with the People's Republic of China. The China Projects Office, located within the School of Urban and Regional Planning, coordinates these activities. The following are the main projects administered by the China Projects Office:

Training for Officials from China’s Ministry of Natural Resources

During the summer, SURP organizes a two-week intensive training program in land use planning for 20-40 government officials from China’s Ministry of Natural Resources. The training includes presentations from experts from Queen’s University, the Government of Ontario, the Federal Government and the private sector, as well as field trips.

Chinese Government Officials Internship Program

The Queen’s - China Ministry of Natural Resources internship program was established 17 years ago under a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the Ministry. The purpose is to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of land and mineral resources administration and management in China by sharing relevant Canadian experiences with Chinese professionals/officials. Every year, 6-8 interns are placed in Canada for five months, in government agencies, private firms and non-governmental organizations to observe and study Canadian practices as well as participate in, and contribute to Canadian projects. Government sponsors over the years have included Natural Resources Canada, Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines, Ministry of Natural Resources, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Municipality of Kingston, and Municipality of Hastings.

Student Summer Internships in Beijing
Students from the School of Urban and Regional Planning also have the opportunity to apply for a spring/summer internship in China at either the China Academy of Land and Resources Economics or the China Land and Surveying and Planning Institute.
