City of Ottawa: Planning Challenges and Issues

Ottawa-Gatineau

Queen’s has a special relationship with Canada’s national capital. The university is renowned for its role in helping establish the federal civil service over the past century and graduates of the School of Urban and Regional Planning can be found throughout the federal, regional and local government agencies.

Canada’s capital region has many unique planning challenges. It must balance “town” and “crown” interests and manage transportation and environmental issues in a region that crosses provincial boundaries.

SURP tours of the national capital often include visits to the ByWard Market, Parliament Hill, a walking tour of Confederation Boulevard, and meeting alumni at City Hall and the National Capital Commission.

Professor Gordon is an Ottawa native and researches the planning history and development of Canada’s national capital. SURP students have conducted over 20 project courses in the region on topics as diverse as airport planning, military base conversions, brownfield redevelopment, animating the Rideau Canal and transit-oriented development.
