The Making of the Witness Blanket: Film Screening

The Making of the Witness Blanket: Film Screening

When:
Thursday, May 23, 2024
2:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Where:
Stauffer Library
Room: 014
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Please join us for the screening of the 90‐minute film “Picking Up the Pieces: The Making of the Witness Blanket”.

Inspired to know more about his father’s time at residential school, Kwagiulth master carver and artist, Carey Newman, whose traditional name is Hayalthkin'geme, created the Witness Blanket – a monument that commemorates the experiences of residential Survivors and their families, as well as the children who didn’t make it home. The Witness Blanket is constructed from hundreds of everyday items collected from residential schools, churches, government buildings and cultural structures across Canada. Each object has a story to tell, each Survivor has something to say. Narrated by the artist, this 90-minute film weaves together those stories with Carey’s personal journey, examining how art can open our hearts to the pain of truth and the beauty of resiliency.

After the film, there will be an opportunity for discussion amongst those in attendance.

The library has been honoured to host Newman’s art installation, The Witness Blanket, in the Fireplace Reading Room until June 6.

RSVP appreciated as light refreshments will be provided.

A robust, modern sustainable finance framework is absolutely vital to attracting investment to Canada and meeting climate targets. While other jurisdictions around the world race ahead, these rules are not yet in place in Canada. However, thanks to the work of the Sustainable Finance Action Council, the Canadian Sustainability Standards Board and other finance sector leaders, we can see the way forward.

What’s required now is to get to work and implement the appropriate climate disclosure standards and regulations, and a credible green and transition taxonomy. This webinar event brings together expert speakers at the forefront of these important discussions, to help establish the next steps for Canada to finally unlock its climate finance potential.

Panellists: Kathy Bardswick, Chair, Sustainable Finance Action Council; Charles-Antoine St-Jean, Chair, Canadian Sustainability Standards Board

Taming complex protein glycoconjugate functions with chemical biology

Huang, M. L.

Abstract:

Protein glycoconjugates, protein products modified with glycan post-translational modifications, are often considered untamable biomolecules. A single protein glycoconjugate can exist as a mixture of heterogeneous unique protein glycoforms in living cells, resulting in innumerable possible interactions with glycan-binding proteins. These individual interactions can play diverse roles in orchestrating physiology and disease. However, current approaches to describe protein glycoconjugates and their interactions are limited, restraining our understanding of the consequent important and often critical functions they play. Using interdisciplinary approaches rooted in chemical biology and high-resolution mass spectrometry, I will outline our efforts to dismantle the complexity of protein glycoconjugates. These endeavors include the fabrication of defined proteoglycans to control cancer cell adhesion on matrices and the elucidation of the proteome-wide interactions of glycan-binding proteins and glycoproteins, as well as the development of synthetic small molecules that differentially engage various protein glycoforms.
