Homecoming

Homecoming

When:
Friday, October 18, 2024 – Sunday, October 20, 2024 (all day)
Where:
Grant Hall
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Each year, thousands of alumni return to Kingston to celebrate Homecoming, reconnect with classmates, learn about university initiatives, and meet current students. We are excited to welcome alumni back to campus during the weekend of October 18 – 20, 2024 for those celebrating milestone reunions with class years ending in 4 or 9.

Homecoming is a reunion of friends and a passing-on of the Queen’s traditions to a younger generation. The first alumni weekend was held almost one hundred years ago, in 1926, and attracted 870 graduates. This annual tradition has continued to grow. The 1970s Homecoming introduced the beloved alumni parade around Richardson Stadium as a chance to showcase school spirit. Historically, Homecoming was planned around Queen’s football game against their rival, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. This year Queen's will be facing off against the Waterloo Warriors, it's sure to be a great game!

Registration opens June 26, register and get excited for Homecoming!

Wilfred Buck, Indigenous Cosmologist, Documentary Screening

Wilfred Buck, Indigenous Cosmologist, Documentary Screening

When:
Wednesday, June 19, 2024
6:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Where:
The Screening Room, 120 Princess Street
Room: (second floor)
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The Screening Room, Kingston’s oldest independent theatre, will screen a new film by Director Lisa Jackson, Wilfred Buck: I Have Lived Four Lives. The film will play for three nights, June 19th, 21st, and 26th, and the McDonald Institute is proud to sponsor the opening night on Wednesday, June 19th, featuring a live Q&A with filmmaker Lisa Jackson.

Weaving together moments of his life today as an expert in Indigenous cosmology and his past as a troubled young child and teen, charismatic Cree Elder Wilfred Buck shares his embodied wisdom and profound reflections on colonial trauma in this expertly crafted adaptation of his autobiographical memoir, I Have Lived Four Lives.

When his family is cruelly torn from their land during the Sixties Scoop, Buck is left to survive on his own, falling into the darkness of addiction, until he discovers the cosmological teachings of his people and finds his way, guided by the celestial beings that become his compass and the focus of his life’s work. Using archival footage, stylized re-enactments, poetic imagery and vérité, director Lisa Jackson brilliantly jumps between genres to craft a constellation of Buck’s key life moments and memories, charting his journey to a knowledge system that survived colonization by going underground, now revived by Buck’s endless curiosity and marvel of the Ininew night sky.

Turning Strategy Into Results

Turning Strategy Into Results

When:
Tuesday, June 25, 2024
1:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Where:
Online (Zoom)
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Creating a strategy is just one step on the road to success. To see results, we must also be able to effectively implement that strategy. That’s easier said than done. Today, only 40 per cent of organizations say they are successful at achieving their strategic objectives; 30 years ago, the success rate was 90 per cent.

Why do so many firms struggle to achieve their strategic goals? What steps can managers and team members take to close the gap between strategy and execution?

On Tuesday, June 25 at 1 pm (ET) join Smith Business Insight and Queen’s Executive Education for this free 60-minute webinar. Results of a five-year study of more than 1,000 organizations will be shared and best practices discussed to help leaders translate their best-laid plans into real business results. Led by Kathryn Brohman, associate professor of digital technology, and Barry Cross, assistant professor of operations strategy at Smith School of Business, you’ll gain a new mindset around strategic execution.

You will learn:

  • Key insights from five years of research identifying barriers to strategy execution
  • Common mistakes companies make in trying to achieve their strategies
  • How to integrate strategic planning and leadership to make things happen
  • Leadership behaviours critical to overcoming common barriers and driving results
  • A new way of thinking about strategic execution

Video Launch: "Belle Park from the Air"

Video Launch: "Belle Park from the Air"

When:
Wednesday, June 26, 2024
7:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Where:
Broom Factory, 305 Rideau Street
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Please join us at the Broom Factory (305 Rideau St) on , June 26th for the launch of our short video, “Belle Park from the Air”, based on 100 years of aerial photographs of Belle Park and Belle Island. These images are not just about the place, they are about the stories and questions they invite. We value your thoughts and want to hear them!

Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at the Broom Factory, 305 Rideau Street

Snacks and refreshments will be served

From 1924 until the present, Belle Park and Belle Island have been photographed regularly from the air — part of a worldwide practice of geographical documentation for military, climatological, and economic purposes. Belle Park from the Air, a short video by Dorit Naaman, Francine Berish, and Laura Murray, with sound by Matt Rogalsky, shows the changes and continuities of this particular space over a century as the wetland was made into a dump and then a park. Initially, we had mainly informational aims (many of you pored over these images with us!), but we find that what we have created, especially with the soundtrack, has a bit of magic to it and invites response and discussion well beyond the facts. We hope you think so too.

The screening will be followed by comments from the makers of the film and community conversation. We want to know what you see!

Remembrance Day Service

Remembrance Day Service

When:
Monday, November 11, 2024
10:45 AM – 11:30 AM
Where:
Grant Hall
Find on Campus Map
Description:

This is a Principal's Office sponsored University event, with collaboration from the University Chaplain. It is held annually in collective Remembrance of all who have fallen in the military service of their country. The service at Queen's pays special remembrance to the many students, faculty, and staff, who have lost their lives in the defence of freedom. We remember especially the 5th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers (a military unit which comprised mostly Queen's, faculty, students, and staff). It is an occasion for solemn reflection, and is held in a respectful and thoughtful way, with particular consideration to the many members of our community who are serving, veterans, or who have family members, who have served, or are serving, including those who have fallen. This is a non partisan event, that reflects on the sombre nature of conflict and associated loss.
