Pints of Particles: Light vs Dark Sides of Matter

Pints of Particles: Light vs Dark Sides of Matter

When:
Tuesday, June 25, 2024
6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Where:
The Mansion, 506 Princess St, Kingston, ON K7L 1C5
Room: The Living Room

Description:

Pints of Particles, a spin-off of Astronomy on Tap, continues in Kingston at the Living Room at The Mansion, with another debate-style event.

Astronomy on Tap is a series of worldwide events where professional astronomers give informal talks at a local bar on topics of a broad interest in astronomy and astrophysics. This particular event will host two fantastic astroparticle physicists: Aaron Vincent and Melissa Baiocchi who will go head-to-head in a debate over the light vs dark sides of matter. The event will be hosted by local astro-buff, Mark Richardson. There will be time for questions and discussion, and the speakers and other local scientists will mingle with the audience between and after the talks, providing lots of opportunities to chat with some keen astronomers. There will also be a trivia session with questions related to astronomy with prizes given out to the winners!

The event is free and open to all ages. The Mansion serves alcohol and non-alcoholic drinks, and food will be available to be ordered.

Pints of Particles will be upstairs as you come inside.

Space is limited, so we encourage you to arrive on time! Pre-show starts at 6:30pm, with the main event starting at 7pm.

Colloidal nanocrystals to advance catalysis and energy technologies

Raffaella Buonsanti

Laboratory of Nanochemistry for Energy Research, Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering, Ecole Politechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Sion CH-1950, Switzerland.

Affordable clean energy and climate action are two of the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations to be achieved by 2030. The vast majority of energy technologies relies on nanomaterials. The progress of these technologies is strongly connected to the ability of inorganic chemists to tune the function-dictating features of nanomaterials. (i.e. size, composition, composition, morphology).

In this talk, I will present our recent group efforts towards the synthesis via colloidal chemistry of atomically defined nanocrystals (NCs) which helps addressing current challenges in catalysis and energy conversion.

The first part will focus on our studies on Cu NCs as one example. I will illustrate how these NCs with precisely tunable shapes, sizes and interfaces serve as ideal platforms to advance our current knowledge towards improved selectivity and stability in the electrochemical CO2 and CO reduction reactions. I will then share our results evidencing that these NCs can sustain their catalytic behavior at technologically relevant conditions, therefore might also offer practical solutions.

Problem Solving with Design Thinking

Problem Solving with Design Thinking

When:
Wednesday, May 8, 2024
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Where:
Description:

It has been said that creativity is intelligence having fun. Design thinking is a problem-solving process that best captures this spirit. It is a human-centred and prototyping-based methodology that helps individuals and teams solve customer problems. The result is better products or services for customers and smarter internal processes for organizations.

How exactly does design thinking work? And how can you incorporate design thinking into your business?

On Wednesday, May 8 at 1 p.m. (ET) join Smith Business Insight and Queen’s Executive Education for this free and informative webinar. Led by Salman Mufti, associate professor at Smith School of Business and an expert on strategic decision-making and digital transformation, you’ll gain a better understanding of design thinking and how it can help individuals, teams and organizations everywhere find solutions and succeed.

You will learn:

  • Key concepts of design thinking
  • How to better understand your customer’s or user’s problems
  • How to quickly generate creative yet feasible solutions
  • Practical ways to incorporate design thinking into your work

This session will be of special interest to leaders and managers dealing with change, or anyone who realizes that conventional thinking and traditional solutions fall short of meeting the changing needs of today’s organizations.

Spring 2024 Grant-writing Workshop & Retreat

Spring 2024 Grant-writing Workshop & Retreat

When:
Thursday, May 23, 2024
9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Where:
Donald Gordon Hotel and Conference Centre, 421 Union Street
Room: Room B
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Clarity in academic writing is good; concision is good; logical organization is good. But none of these matter if your writing is not seen by readers to be valuable to them. Commonly it’s thought that value is a matter not of writing but of content; make the writing clear and logical, and value will take care of itself. In fact, successful academic texts—including successful grant applications—rely on a host of writing techniques specific to value, and not just communicating value, but also creating it.

In the morning session (9 am to noon), Dr. McEnerney will lead workshop attendees through essential techniques for creating value. In three afternoon sessions of 50-minutes each (1-4 pm), Dr. McEnerney will work specifically with researchers in health sciences, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities in order to focus on techniques for creating value in specific disciplines for specific readers.

Whether or not they reserve an afternoon session with Dr. McEnerney, attendees are encouraged to stay and make use of a quiet, writing-only space in which they can work on grant applications or other projects.

Research Project Advisors will also be available for one-on-one or small-group consultations in twenty-minute blocks.

A buffet lunch will be served between noon and 1 pm.
