10:30 – 11:45 AM | Invitation not assimilation: Inclusive listening to expand academic spaces and connect to global knowledges

Description: International students are often told to adapt to eurocentric ways in order to be successful at university in Canada, but what happens if we challenge the primacy of the eurocentric approach? Join us at this session to hear from students and faculty about the skills they’ve developed as intercultural communicators and how we can be better listeners to ideas from other academic cultures.

2:30 - 3:30 PM | Linguistic justice in assessment
Intended audience: faculty, staff, teaching assistants
Description: We all come to post-secondary classrooms with different linguistic and academic experiences; however, at most post-secondary institutions in Canada, certain varieties of English are valued more than others. As instructors at Queen’s attempt to create more inclusive learning experiences, they are encouraged to consider how to best support multilingual students with their academic success. Linguistic justice, and the decolonization of language, focuses on the inequitable systems and structures that inhibit multilingual students from thriving in their learning. In this workshop, participants will engage in activities to develop an understanding of linguistic justice concepts and explore strategies for creating linguistically responsive assessments.

Description: Sound Play is a creation-based public program geared for the Global Education at Queen's Conference. Rather than being rooted in instrumental performance, this creative composition allows for anyone to wander in and simply play with sound. The premier music production club at Queen’s University – QWAVE will be leading participants through free form sound play.

Intended audience: faculty, students, staff
Description: Hear from current international students about their perspectives on university life in Canada and the potential futures for a campus that embraces multilingualism, interculturality, and multiple approaches to producing academic work.

Intended audience: students, multilingual members of the Queen's community
Description: Speak Up is a weekly workshop series that focuses on speaking skills for academic situations. Join us for this special interactive session, where we'll use the art of observation to explore the QUIC International Student Photo Contest entries. Part academic skills workshop, part social event, this session is designed to bring together students from all disciplines and degrees to work on discussion skills for the classroom and beyond.
