If the value of proper records management is not already obvious, there is another reason to pay attention. Recent amendments to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) now require institutions to take "reasonable measures" to preserve records in their custody or control in accordance with applicable records retention requirements.

In addition, it is now an offence to alter, conceal or destroy a record with the intention of denying lawful access to it.
