SPECIAL CALL: Internal Applications due July 20, 2020
Queen’s University invites applications from eligible individuals to be considered for nomination to a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in all fields of study as represented by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
The University expects to select candidates for nomination to two Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs. At minimum, one of the two chairs will be designated as a SSHRC CRC. The second Chair is open to research in all areas and will be designated as appropriate (NSERC, CIHR or SSHRC).
Applicants must hold a full-time faculty appointment at Queen’s as a Full Professor or as Associate Professor in the tenured/tenure-stream with the expectation of submitting an application for promotion to Full Professor within one to two years of the nomination.
This special call is open only to qualified individuals who self- identify as women. We welcome and support applications from candidates who also identify in other under-represented equity-seeking groups, including but not exclusive to the other three federally designated groups of Indigenous Peoples, Persons with Disabilities, and Members of Visible Minorities.

Canada Research Chairs are established as part of a national strategy to foster research excellence. Please consult the website (chairs-chaires.gc.ca) for full program information, including details on general eligibility criteria. Tier 1 Canada Research Chairs are intended for outstanding world-class researchers.
Eligibility
The successful candidate must meet the requirements for the position of Tier 1 Chair as defined by the CRC program:
- be outstanding and innovative world-class researchers whose accomplishments have made a major impact in their fields;
- be recognized internationally as leaders in their fields;
- have superior records of attracting and supervising graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (taking into account different practices in the relevant field or discipline) and, as chairholders, be expected to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers; and
- be proposing an original, innovative research program of the highest quality.
In addition, the impact of certain circumstances (including but not limited to parental leave, family responsibilities, illness, disability, research in emerging fields, limited access to resources) that may legitimately affect a nominee’s record of research achievement will be given careful consideration when assessing the nominee’s research productivity. Candidates are encouraged to provide any relevant information about their experience and/or career interruptions to allow for a fair assessment of their application.
Internal Applications (in one PDF document) will consist of:
- maximum 2 pages outlining the candidate’s most important research/scholarly contributions;
- maximum 2 pages outlining how a $30k/year research stipend and teaching reduction to at least 25% less than the current norm in the candidate’s department/unit will be used to create or extend an innovative research program over the 7-year term of the Chair;
- maximum 1 page outlining any leaves and/or relevant information about the candidate’s experience and/or career interruptions that will allow for a fair assessment of the application;
- a current long form Curriculum Vitae (CV) that includes academic publications and presentations, research funding history, student supervision and training record (distinguish among undergraduate, Masters and PhD students, research associates, and post-doctoral fellows), and teaching and service activities (clearly indicate students, trainees and post- doctoral fellows when listing co-authored publications/presentations);
Applications are due to research@queensu.ca no later than July 20 2020.
All applications will be reviewed by the Queen’s CRC Executive Committee for candidate eligibility, including the meeting of the requirements for the position of Tier 1 Chair as defined by the CRC program. Any eligibility questions or concerns will be shared with the applicant.
Applications from all eligible candidates will be reviewed and assessed by a diverse internal panel(s) as represented by CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC. The panel(s) will be chaired by the Vice Principal (Research) or designate, with panel membership to be finalized following the receipt of applications. The panel(s) will make recommendations to the Queen’s CRC Executive Committee.
Decisions will be released to applicants by August 31 2020. Full nomination packages for successful candidates must be submitted to the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS) by November 9 2020. Decisions are anticipated to be released in May 2021.
