A Transformative Investment from Bruce Mitchell

The Vice-Principal Research is honoured to be the steward for the extraordinary gift made by Bruce Mitchell (Sc’68, DSc'20) that was announced on February 21, 2023. As indicated in announcing the gift, the program will improve and expand research in several ways:

  • Nine existing faculty members will receive funds to ignite their research programs and teams
  • Nine new faculty members will be hired to support research intensity in strategic research areas
  • Queen’s will recruit 54 postdoctoral fellows
  • Queen’s will increase the size of its graduate student body and enhance the University’s competitiveness in attracting a diverse global pool of graduate scholars, through financial support for an estimated 79 graduate students

More details on how the gift will be organized and distributed will be forthcoming.

In anticipation of the Bruce Mitchell gift, the Vice-Principal Research Postdoctoral Fund was launched to attract outstanding postdoctoral fellows to Queen’s University and foster greater recognition of trainees as research leaders of the future. Applications are now being accepted to fund two years of salary support, for up to six PDFs, that will be supported by the gift. In the first application deadline, 25 applications were received, and applications are now being accepted for the May 1st intake date. Each award is valued at $50,000 per year of the funding period for a total of $100,000 per recipient.

Safeguarding Research

Last month, members of the Vice-Principal Research Portfolio attended the Research Securities in Today’s Geo-Political Era conference hosted by the University of Waterloo. Protecting research is a growing concern for academic institutions and conference sessions were built around understanding the geopolitical environment with respect to threats in research. Representatives from funding agencies and government officials were on hand to provide attendees with direction and guidance. Information garnered at this conference will enhance the Vice-Principal Research Portfolio’s ability to provide informative and timely support to researchers in their assessment and mitigation of research security risks.
