Brief Bio:

Dr. Zongchao Jia joined Queen's in 1995 after earning his Ph.D. from the University of Saskatchewan and completing post-doctoral training at the University of Oxford, where he specialized in structural biology with a focus on protein phosphorylation and its functional implications.

Dr. Jia became a Full Professor in 2004 and has held the Canada Research Chair since 2000. He has extensive experience in protein structure-function studies, particularly in the areas of protein phosphorylation, polyphosphate modification (a novel finding from his lab), calcium-binding proteins, host-pathogen interactions, and structure-based drug design.

As a highly productive researcher, Dr. Jia has authored >300 publications, including eight in prestigious journals such as Nature, Science, and Cell. His work has garnered >14,000 citations, resulting in an H-index of 56. Additionally, he holds several patents.

Dr. Jia’s contributions to science have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Queen’s National Scholar designation, Medical Research Council Scholar, Ontario Premier Research Excellence Award, and Queen’s Chancellor’s Research Award. He is also a recipient of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Investigator designation and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Steacie Fellowship, among others.
