In Fall 2024, a seven member team of Master of Planning students from the School of Urban and Regional Planning (SURP) successfully completed a community based international planning project in India. The team conducted a social impact analysis of Auroville, a city located in southern India, on its surrounding villages. The project involved spending two weeks in Auroville to conduct fieldwork involving interviews and focus group discussions with local community members, archival research, and systematic field observations.
At the end of the fieldtrip, the students presented their findings at a public presentation in Auroville, and proposed recommendations to enhance positive social impacts and mitigate negative ones. They also recommended ways to promote stronger social integration between Auroville and its surrounding villages.
Despite usual challenges of working in an international setting compounded by a cyclonic storm that was passing through the region during their visit, the students demonstrated exceptional resilience and project management skills to successfully accomplish the project.
