When:
Thursday, November 2, 2023
9:00 AM – 10:15 AM
Where:
Microsoft Teams Webinar

Description:

What is workplace compassion and why does it matter? What supports compassion at work, what might get in the way, and how do we overcome those barriers? Join us to explore these questions and learn how to cultivate compassion in your own workplace in a keynote session led by Dr. Jacoba Lilius, an expert on the topic of organizational compassion.

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Jacoba Lilius, has been studying compassion at work for more than two decades. As a founding member of the CompassionLab (www.compassionlab.com) while she was a graduate student, she and her colleagues pioneered the study of workplace compassion, an area of research that has since had increasing resonance with academics and practitioners alike. After receiving her PhD in Organizational Psychology from the University of Michigan in 2006, Dr. Lilius joined the faculty at Queen's and through her teaching, research, community, and consulting work continues her mission to help others consider the importance of compassion at work, what might get in the way of organizational compassion, and how awareness of these barriers can inform deliberate practice. In this presentaion, Dr. Lilius will share key findings from both the CompassionLab's research and related research on the topic of compassion.

A charter for compassion?

Karen Armstrong -- winner of the 2008 TED Prize -- is a provocative, original thinker on the role of religion in the modern world. In this TED, she professes that the essence of every organized religion is compassion. With the Charter for Compassion, Karen Armstrong challenged the world to bring the Golden Rule to the center of life. As this TED shows, compassion does not need to be connected to religion, it is connected to our humanity.

Learn about how her vision inspired Greg Fischer -- the mayor of Louisville, Kentucky -- to lead the city in fascinating new directions.

Perfection and Imposter Syndrome

Perfection and Imposter Syndrome

When:
Monday, October 30, 2023
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
Where:
Description:

We argue that our perfectionism drives us to great heights, to excel, and to maintain our edge. We rarely stop to see the costs it carries. Imposter syndrome distorts the way we see ourselves, our performance, and our capabilities. Both reflect our doubts and fears – fear of being judged, fear of failing, fear of not being good enough, fear of not belonging. They’re the product of distorted thinking patterns. Thinking patterns that we can change.

We explore:

  • The true costs of these doubts and fears, and the extent to which they are impacting on your productivity, mental clarity, and your joy for what you do.
  • Simple ways to notice when your perfectionism or imposter syndrome is tripping you up.
  • Simple ways to reshape your inner critic to be more objective and more compassionate, so that you can thrive thanks to the voice in your head, rather than in spite of it.

About the facilitator:

Desiree Dickerson PhD is a clinical psychologist who specialises in the mental health and well-being of our research community. As a former researcher in the neurosciences, Desiree works globally with universities, lab groups, and academics in the pursuit of a healthier approach to research.
