Living Traditions: a Social Sewing Circle with Oleepika Nashalik and Talia Metuq at Agnes

Living Traditions: a Social Sewing Circle with Oleepika Nashalik and Talia Metuq at Agnes

When:
Saturday, October 28, 2023
1:00 PM – 4:30 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Join artists Oleepika Nashalik and Talia Metuq at this social sewing circle that celebrates the beauty and use of traditional materials such as beads, hides and fur.

Oleepika and Talia share some of their handmade work and discuss designs and techniques passed on by their ancestors. Participants have the chance to complete a small project working with sealskin. You are also encouraged to bring your own sewing projects and materials that you would like to swap with others.

Participants have an opportunity to explore the world of Inuit mythology with the game Inuit Uppirijatuqangit, developed and written by Talia Metuq (art by Ian MacLean, produced by Pinnguaq). This game invites users to learn the traditional oral stories told by the Elders while creating a mode of preservation of Inuit culture.

Oleepika and Talia welcome mothers, daughters, grandmothers, Elders, aunties, friends, and anyone interested in learning from each other in the time honoured tradition of the sewing circle.

This program is made possible by the Guardian Capital Indigenous Art Fund.

Biography

Abby Nowakowski (she/they) is a queer interdisciplinary artist and art educator currently living and working in Sharbot Lake and Katarokwi-Kingston. Through printmaking, illustration and handpoke tattooing, they spread advocacy for care, share stories, and make space for radical softness. Abby is drawn to the gentler pace of handpoke and takes a trauma-informed approach to tattooing which has fostered a safer and more empowering experience for clients. Driven by curiosity and kindness, their practice extends into art facilitation with a range of collaborations, workshops, and performances which radiate from queer ecologies and friendships.

Supported by the Guardian Capital Indigenous Art Fund. Bursaries are made possible by the Rita Friendly Kaufman Fund.

1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre

Description:

A slow and intentional community-engaged design process takes time. It is unpredictable and exciting! As we transition from schematic design into design development, we reconvene our sharing and talking circles for Agnes Reimagined, recapping what has already taken shape, clearing the path for the future. Led by our collaborator, Anishinaabe-kwe artist and consultant Georgina Riel, these sessions are aligned with various key moments for KPMB Architects who are listening to what people bring to the table, incorporating our ideas, suggestions and values into the various design iterations (and there are many!).

2 December 2024
Art Everywhere! Makers Spaces, Studios and Residencies, and Returning Etherington House back into a “Home.” The Agnes Reimagined Project Team (KPMB Architects & RIEL Cultural Consulting) would like to invite you to share your ideas and thoughts to contribute to the design development of the new creative and hospitality spaces.

Everyone is welcome!

Open Secret: Book Launch + Workshop with Rhayne Vermette (Agnes)

Open Secret: Book Launch + Workshop with Rhayne Vermette (Agnes)

When:
Sunday, October 22, 2023
1:30 PM – 3:00 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Open Secret: The Second Edition continues as a series composed of screenings, conversations, and workshops kicking off this season by celebrating the work of Rhayne Vermette, with an additional event, a book launch of Exovede in the Darkroom: The Films of Rhayne Vermette, in partnership with ARP Books.

Vermette’s work invites us to think through the compelling ways in which image-making and storytelling inspire visions of hauntological architectures; condition forms of an intimate materiality; and activate the potency of landscapes as they tend to divine interventions.

Book Launch + Workshop

Rhayne and participants have the opportunity to engage in a more intimate setting as we use this time to gather to talk, discuss, inquire about Rhayne’s practice, and workshop ideas and strategies as we watch and listen in context. We’ll explore sound and vision through varied studies of how rhythm and harmony instruct varied processes in storytelling and filmmaking.

Copies of Exovede in the Darkroom: The Films of Rhayne Vermette are available for purchase.

Supported by the George Taylor Richardson Memorial Fund, Queen’s University.

Screening + Conversation

Ste. Anne (2021)
As a party wanders into the night, word arrives that Renée has emerged from obscurity. This cataclysmic moment ignites Modeste’s awkward reunion with his older sibling. Renée has been missing for years and her presence unsettles the family, which also includes her own daughter, Athene. As Renée begins to form her dreams from fragments of her past, ominous premonitions disrupt the land.

Shot over the course of two years, Ste. Anne traces an allegorical reclamation of land through personal, symbolic and historical sites across Treaty 1 Territory, the heartland of the Métis Nation.

The screening is followed by a conversation with Rhayne, as well as co-editor of Exovede in the Darkroom, Irene Bindi, moderated by Nasrin Himada.

Tracing Kingston’s Solidarities (Agnes Off-site Project)

Tracing Kingston’s Solidarities (Agnes Off-site Project)

When:
Saturday, November 4, 2023
9:30 AM – 5:30 PM
Where:
Kingston's Outdoor Market Square
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Kingston has a rich history of Black life, Tracing Kingston’s Solidarities, is a series of performance pop-ups that looks to activate these hidden Black histories. Each day focuses on a person or family and their history in the city. Gesturing toward abundant print histories and archives, a mobile printing press is situated on Market Square. The public are invited to print t-shirts and pick up a brochure that explains the life behind the images. In this way the performance responds to a hidden history and scrutinizes both visible and invisible pasts.

Tracing Kingston’s Solidarities is a collaboration between interdisciplinary artist Alejandro Arauz and Agnes’s Associate Curator, Arts of Africa Qanita Lilla. The mobile printing press was fabricated by Arauz, whose practice explores issues of identity and diaspora through the vernacular of print media, performance, and video. Lilla’s curatorial work looks to provide alternatives to exclusionary museum practices.
