Description:

Combining poetry and elegance, charismatic young pianist Tony Siqi Yun is the recent first prize winner at the 2019 First China International Music Competition and a Recipient of the Rheingau Music Festival's LOTTO-Förderpreis, 2023. Known as “a true poet of the keyboard” (Pianist Magazine), Tony Siqi Yun will be bringing an intriguing showcase of Bach, Liszt, Beethoven, and Berio, ending the recital with Brahms’ powerful third Sonata.

Description:

Experience the tradition of cante jondo and Spanish classical and flamenco guitar with two of today’s most celebrated and innovative young artists.

Israel Fernández is one of the leading voices of a new generation of flamenco cantaors, drawing from the deep well of flamenco to captivate new audiences with its timeless power. Born into a Roma family in Corral de Almaguer (Toledo), he infuses traditional flamenco singing with his own distinctive style.

Diego del Morao is one of the most internationally recognized flamenco guitarists. Lauded by virtuoso flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia, del Morao has a legion of followers who love his personality and passionate sense of rhythm. He has created his own music and style without losing respect for the tradition of his roots.

Captivating audiences and critics alike, the “brilliant” (The Sunday Times) and “truly exhilarating” (The WholeNote) Cheng² Duo (pronounced Cheng Squared Duo) distinguishes itself with its uncompromising musical integrity, undeniable chemistry, and unparalleled communication with its listeners. The Chinese-Canadian brother-and-sister duo is formed by cellist Bryan Cheng, prizewinner of the 2022 Queen Elisabeth Competition, 2021 Concours de Genève, and the 2020 Bader & Overton Canadian Cello Competition, and pianist Silvie Cheng, 2022-23 musician-in residence of Cecilia Concerts in Halifax.

As part of the internationally recognized Dark Matter Day, come out to our evening event on Nov 4th being held by the McDonald Institute, the Queen’s Observatory, and Queen’s Physics Department. We’ll have a fascinating talk by Professor Aaron Vincent about using the sun as a giant dark matter detector, then we’ll host various activities and demonstrations, including tours of the Queen’s Observatory. Feel free to dress up, as we’ll also have candy, a costume contest, and free giveaways!

Description:

Join us for an engaging afternoon on dark matter! a collection of scientists and educators at the McDonald Institute at Queen’s University are running a free afternoon workshop for high school students covering the essence of science, the astronomical evidence of dark matter, how particle detectors work and led to our understanding of the standard model of physics. We will then dive deep into the Earth to take a close look at SNOLAB, the underground science facility where detectors are looking for dark matter. We’ll conclude with a tour of the McDonald Institute Visitor Centre and Stirling Hall physics labs and then invite you to stay for some free pizza and chat with other interested students and ask questions of our scientists.

The workshop will end in time for students to join the Dark Matter Day lecture starting at 7pm.
