The linguistic diversity of Canadian university campuses is increasing. According to enrolment figures from 2021, international students, many of whom have English as an additional language, comprise roughly 14% of the Queen’s undergraduate and graduate student population.

This panel discussion explores faculty expectations around academic English at Queen’s and asks how we might balance concerns around needing a shared language for classroom discussions and assessment with the need to embrace the linguistic diversity of students.

The opportunity of studying abroad appeals to many students at Queen’s. Immersing yourself in a new academic, cultural, and often a new linguistic environment is a chance for immense growth of personal and academic nature. This growth also affects our identities- we enter our host cultures with pre-established identities and during our time abroad we may experience changes affecting us in many ways. Do we come back the same person we once were? In this panel, we will discover stories of students who went on an exchange and learn how this experience shaped them.

R4R@Q Session - Indigenous Community Research Partnerships

R4R@Q Session - Indigenous Community Research Partnerships

When:
Thursday, December 8, 2022
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Where:
Description:

Research conducted with authentic partnerships and full community engagement with Indigenous people is urgently needed to address health inequities. Many researchers may not understand how to work with Indigenous communities and lack resources to guide them in conducting research that is equitable, inclusive and respectful of diverse Indigenous knowledge, ethics, practice and research sovereignty.

Indigenous Community Research Partnerships (ICRP) is an online open education training resource.  It is designed to assist researchers who are new to research in partnerships with Inuit, Métis and First Nations (“Indigenous”) communities, or who are researchers-in-training, to:

  • Operationalize required regulatory policy requirements and research directives;
  • Ensure equitable inclusion of Indigenous and Western-oriented knowledge in research systems
  • And, in the case of Indigenous-specific enquiry, to privilege or give primacy to Indigenous ways of knowing and doing.

In this session, the co-creators of the training resource, will talk about the collaborative development of the resource, its goals and the importance of a principled approach to research partnerships with Indigenous communities.

Thrive Week - Lunch THEN Learn Series: Mindful Self-Compassion

Thrive Week - Lunch THEN Learn Series: Mindful Self-Compassion

When:
Friday, November 4, 2022
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM
Where:
Mackintosh-Corry Hall
Room: B176 Lecture Theatre
Find on Campus Map
Description:

Please join us for Thrive Week taking place from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4!

Thrive is a week-long events series aimed at building positive mental health and wellness through discussion, learning, skill development, and resource sharing. This year’s events focus on the key concepts of happiness and joy.

Featured events to look forward to, include:

  • Lunch THEN Learn Series: Mindful Self-Compassion
    • Networking: 12pm-1pm | Seminar: 1pm-2pm | Date: Nov 4
    • Description: Our brains are wired for survival, which creates a natural tendency to focus on and be motivated by negative thought patterns like criticism, pain, and danger. Self-compassion training helps educators understand and transform these habitual responses and develop the ability to motivate with compassion rather than self-criticism. The science shows – and through our work we, can see – that self-compassion has a significant positive impact on educator well-being, resilience, and stress management. Practicing self-compassion involves taking action and making positive changes in our lives. Through this process, we see people reconnecting with their deep motivation and excitement for helping others.
