Description:

More than 100 Kingston professional musicians and youth ensembles will unite to send a message of support to the people of Ukraine. This exciting concert will feature members of the Kingston Symphony, DAN School of Music faculty, PALENAI Piano Duo, Bridge Wolak Duo, Jan LeClair, and guest Ukrainian soprano, Nataliia Temnyk. The Maky Ukrainian Dance Ensemble will welcome the audience in the colorful Pryvit dance. Young musicians representing Canta Arya School for Strings, Kingston Youth Orchestra, Cantabile Youth Singers and soloist Mathieu Roberge will join in the message of hope. Photography of Ukraine, Ukrainian art, and powerful images from the war by photojournalists will add a multidimensional element to the evening.

Join us to support the people of Ukraine through a performance presented by artists across genres and disciplines uniting to show their solidarity during this conflict. All proceeds from this event will be donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Fund of the Ukraine Humanitarian Relief committee - a joint partnership of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.

Lecture 3: Stephanie Simpson on empowering others and Human Rights in University.

This online Zoom lecture series centres speakers' diverse experiences navigating the challenging world of academia, finding opportunities within and beyond postsecondary institutions, and carving space for themselves and others in their fields. 

Stephanie Simpson is the Associate Vice Principal (Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion) at Queen’s University. Stephanie leads the Human Rights and Equity Office and plays a key role in fostering both competence and legislative compliance around matters such as inclusivity, diversity, accessibility, human rights, sexual violence prevention and equity on Queen’s campus. Stephanie holds a Master of Education degree and a Master of Laws degree from Queen’s. Her research has focused on how racism and processes of racialization affect youth in smaller urban centres, as well as adjudicative silences with respect to racial inequality and access to justice for racial equality seekers. Stephanie has been a well-respected leader on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for many years.

A long-time advocate and motivational speaker, Jeff's work focuses on the intersection of disability, subjectivity, biopower and culture. Jeff's first book, The Fantasy of Disability, was published in 2017 by Routledge.

Sharry Aiken is a law professor and founding Academic Director of a new Graduate Diploma in Immigration and Citizenship Law. A long-time activist for human rights and social justice, she is a past president of the Canadian Council for Refugees (CCR), and the former co-chair of the Canadian Centre for International Justice. Prof. Aiken currently serves on the board of a refugee serving agency in Toronto and is co-editor of the PKI Global Justice Journal, published here at Queen's. Formative experiences, before coming to Queen's, included a few years working with Canada World Youth facilitating youth exchange programs as well as a year in Sioux Lookout developing a popular education program on legal literacy.

We'll cover the sexual violence policy and the related responsibilities of instructors who hear a disclosure.  Included will be a conversation to identify campus and community resources for support students.

Why do we grade? Are grades a good measure of student learning? Are there alternatives to grading? In this informal session, panelists and participants will be invited to share their experiences and experiments with “ungrading”. Professors Misty Underwood (OII, Education), Mary Louise Adams (Kinesiology), and Sarah Shulist (LLCU) will reflect on changes they have made to their assessments, as well as tensions, failures and successes with different modes of ungrading and contract grading. The discussion will then turn to audience members who will share their experiences,

On behalf of Queen’s Health Sciences, Dean Philpott and Dr. Stephen Scott are pleased to present the 'Mihran and Mary Basmajian Award for Excellence in Health Research' to Dr. Amber Simpson (2020 recipient), Dr. Heidi Cramm (2021 recipient), Dr. Timothy Hanna (2021 recipient), and Dr. Kerstin de Wit (2022 recipient). After a years-long hiatus on social events, we have planned for a combined celebration for the last four recipients. The evening will start with the presentations of the awards, short talks on the recipients’ research, and will be followed by a reception in the adjoining atrium (cash bar).
