Men's Sheds are community spaces for men to connect, converse and create. The activities are often similar to those of garden sheds, but for groups of men to enjoy together. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, but most importantly, they’re fun!
Tackling loneliness
Men’s Sheds is a charity organisation which aims to provide the means for local men to meet, make connections and indulge in a shared passion for woodworking, mechanics, mending, building and all manner of other activities that are traditionally the domain of the garden shed. While these hobbies are usually solitary in nature, Men’s Sheds seek to create quite the opposite – a sense of inclusivity and togetherness. Its members are given a place to meet up, share practical skills, swap knowledge and chat with like-minded tinkerers. In this way, the charity builds communities and reduces feelings of isolation and loneliness.
The Men’s Shed concept originated in Australia over 20 years ago when men found it difficult to socialise after retirement or trauma or find social venues that did not include bars. There are now around 400 Men’s Sheds in the UK offering the opportunity for members to meet, pass on skills or knowledge and feel they still contribute to the community. The contact also offers a form of therapy and purpose, particularly following illness, or bereavement. Some venues are just sheds with a few chairs, kettle, and a workbench.
Men's Shed at the Castle
The Herstmonceux Men’s Shed is in the workshop space adjoining the Science Laboratories at the Castle, working on individual projects, as well as assisting our Estate Team and students by creating bird boxes, signage, and even a Mink Raft! It is open on Wednesdays from 10.00 am until 4.30pm. To reflect wider local interest, it is also a Community Workshop which men and women can attend.
You can bring your own projects along, join in one of our community repair projects, or just have a cup of tea and pick up hints and tips. In addition to the workbenches and wide range of hand and power tools, we have an area with tables and chairs for planning, or working on projects and craftwork.
You do not have to be expert in a craft, as members are encouraged to share their skills and help others. Workspaces are two metres apart and facemasks are optional for closer working.
