The Gerri MacEwen Memorial Lecture in Nursing Fund

Donor Story:

Gerri MacEwen (nee Hamilton) was born in Belleville ON in 1950, was raised in Peterborough ON and graduated from the Kingston General Hospital School of Nursing in August 1971.  She practised nursing at both the Kingston General Hospital and the Wellesley Hospital in Toronto.

Gerri married Pete MacEwen (Meds‘73) in 1972.  They settled in Ottawa in 1978 and for many years she managed the business aspect of Pete’s anesthetic practice at the Ottawa Hospital’s Civic Campus.  Gerri was an excellent nurse, wife and mother and took pride in all three roles.  She loved her family above all else. Gerri also took great pleasure in her home, genealogy, gardening and animals. She believed strongly in the sanctity of all living creatures.  Their son Kenny studied Mechanical Engineering at Queen’s (Sci‘06).

In 2018, Gerri passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at her home after a brief but devastating illness.  Having lost the love of his life, Pete decided, in consultation with Kenny, to establish an endowed annual lecture in her memory at the Queen’s School of Nursing.

During his years as a medical student and anesthesia resident at Queen’s and his years of practice and teaching in Ottawa, Pete had always been inspired and motivated by visiting professors’ lectures and he wished to enable the same inspiration for Queen’s nursing students, in Gerri’s memory.
