The Dr. Frances A. Shepherd Award

Donor Story:

Dr. Frances Shepherd OC, OOnt, MD, FRCPC, LLD (Hon) is Canada's leading researcher in the field of lung cancer, an outstanding mentor and teacher. Dr Shepherd designed and led more than 100 clinical trials and her studies have changed treatment and outcomes for patients with lung cancer at a global level. She sits on numerous national and international lung cancer advisory boards, committees and cancer research societies.

Dr. Shepherd's commitment to the Canadian Cancer Trials Group (CCTG) has been unwavering for several decades. She feels that the faith placed in her ability to lead the Lung Cancer Site Group by Dr. Joseph Pater, the inaugural Chair of the trial group, was the most influential factor in shaping her career in lung cancer clinical trials. In fact, the CCTG has been responsible for the successful career development of many Canadian investigators who have risen to prominence nationally and internationally in the field of clinical trials for many cancer types.

In recognition of the critical role played by the CCTG throughout her professional career, Dr. Shepherd feels it is time to “give back” by sharing her Gairdner Award with the CCTG. This award, to be endowed in perpetuity, will recognize excellence in clinical trials and translational research and will be open to all qualified CCTG investigators and post graduate trainees working on CCTG research projects.
