Stephen Sigurdson Professorship in Corporate Law and Finance

Donor Story

Stephen Paul Sigurdson was born in Morden, Manitoba in 1959.  He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba graduating with a B.Sc. in 1981 followed by a LL.B. degree from Queen’s University in 1984. Mr. Sigurdson spent the majority of his professional career with Osler, Oskin & Harcourt LLP where he held a number of roles including Associate, Chair of the Business Law Department and Managing Partner. In 2010, he joined Manulife Financial as General Council Canada and was appointed Executive Vice President and General Council in 2014. Mr. Sigurdson passed away on November 16, 2016.

In addition to his career accomplishments, Mr. Sigurdson was an active participant in the broader community. He was a long-time Director of the Board of the Canadian Stage Company and a former member of the campaign cabinet for the Toronto United Way. As a proud and engaged Queen’s alumnus he was a member of the Deans’ Law Council from 2011 to 2016 and was appointed Vice Chair of the Council in 2015.

Mr. Sigurdson’s public reputation, both as a lawyer and private citizen, is above reproach. He was universally admired by those who knew him for his intelligence, integrity, kindness and sense of humour. A former colleague put it best when he said “[Steve] had a brilliant mind, [a] great sense of humour [and was] morally and ethically as straight as an arrow.” It would be difficult to find better support for the establishment of a named Professorship in honour of the life and accomplishments of Queen’s alumnus Stephen Paul Sigurdson.
