Shirley Roberts Gerontology Studentship

Donor Story:

I am offering this research award because I am determined to do what I can to improve the quality of life of elders in their declining years, which is urgently needed as our population ages.  I see shortcomings in the current care approaches used by health care professionals and families, that I identified while doing research for my book, Doris Inc.:  A Business Approach to Caring for Your Elderly Parents.  While attending a Canadian Geriatrics Society Conference, I discovered that the magnitude of these shortcomings is even greater than I thought.  I am hopeful that my encouragement of the field of geriatrics, and the publication of a worthy research paper, will improve the quality of life of elders in a tangible and practical way.

I would be pleased to offer the award winners mentoring support in financial management, communications, and to better understand families' and elders' perspectives, dynamics and issues.

About the Fund:

Established in October 2017 by Shirley Roberts in honour of her late husband, Mitchell Fenton. The Shirley Roberts Gerontology Studentship Fund shall be used towards funding two studentships for Queen's medical students in the summer immediately after their first or second year of medical school, to undertake a clinical placement with a geriatrician, studying geriatric medicine and care of the elderly.
