Murray Satov
Artsci’89
Murray Satov, Artsci’89, instinctively knew how to make people feel special. Passionate, outspoken, caring, and articulate, he loved to laugh, and when he spoke with you, he made you feel like you were the only person in the room. He had an uncanny ability to develop a connection with and befriend everyone he met, engaging all with his generosity, intellect, and sense of humour.
Murray loved his time at Queen’s, where he enjoyed the student experience while pursuing his passion for fine art and art history.
After graduating from Queen’s, Murray spent a few years working and traveling before earning a Master of Philosophy in Anthropology and Museum Ethnography from the University of Oxford.
Murray then joined his family business. A testament to the love and devotion he had for his family, he took on this business and enjoyed a successful career, but never lost his love of art.
When Murray passed away, he left a hole in the lives of the many people who had the good fortune of knowing him. When considering how to honour Murray’s memory, several friends came up with the idea of returning to Murray’s alma mater. They wanted him to be remembered in some way that reflected what he loved. He loved Queen’s and he loved art. So they decided to establish a bursary that will help students pursue their own passions the way that Murray did.
When asked, Murray’s friends said that Murray would want the students to enjoy their time at Queen’s, to be passionate about whatever they do. And above all, be a good person. This gift is in memory of a very good person.
