Inspiring Change

The Carrick family

“Our family decided to support the creation of The Faculty of Health Sciences Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Fund to address the long-overdue initiative of taking action on equity, diversity, and inclusion,” says Sarah Carrick. “We are privileged to have had several generations of our family graduate from Queen’s University. We wish equal opportunity for all persons seeking an education -- at Queen’s or any Canadian institution. The Queen’s leadership in this area will be an example for others to follow.

Our family has been blessed with the gift and ability to give financially. We are committed to improving the quality of life and the promotion of good governance by providing financial support to various endeavours, with a focus on short-term impact and/or long-term sustainable reform. We hope to witness historical change at Queen’s University, and that these changes will have a justifiable ripple effect on other institutions across Canada.

There are many barriers and colonial structures that need to be broken down for many students to even think of attending a health science program at university. We hope the recipients feel supported, included, and have a voice throughout their university experience. We hope that the funding will provide personal growth opportunities for future generations and facilitate engaged fulfilling lives."

The FHS EDI Fund is one of many initiatives that demonstrate Queen’s commitment to advancing our standing in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which track how universities are progressing toward the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). The FHS EDI Fund aligns with Queen’s goal to move more towards SDG #10 – Reduced Inequalities, which covers research on social inequalities, policies on discrimination, and recruiting staff and students from under-represented groups.
