On the morning of Oct. 26, Queen’s alumna and former Queen’s Law professor, Anita Anand, Artsci’89, was appointed the Minister of Defence as part of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new cabinet, announced prior to Parliament’s Nov. 22 return.
The swearing-in ceremony, overseen by Governor-General Mary May Simon, LLD’94, saw nine new faces added to the cabinet, three removed, some notable shuffles, and the creation of new portfolios.
Among the cabinet changes, The Honourable Anita Anand, was appointed Minister of National Defence, becoming the second woman in Canadian history to take on the role, following former Prime Minister Kim Campbell.
This follows her appointment as Minister of Public Services and Procurement in 2019. Months prior to that appointment, Anand was elected the Member of Parliament for Oakville, Ont. where she has served on the Board of Directors of the Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children, the Oakville Hospital Foundation, and Oakville Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc.
Previously, Anand was a professor at Queen’s Law from 1999 to 2005, where she taught Contracts, Business Associations, Advanced Securities, Applied Business Law Seminar, Securities Regulations, and Law & Economics. The Law Students’ Society awarded her its 2006 Teaching Excellence Award.
