Ali Velshi, Artsci’94, grew up in Toronto and is the son of Murad Velshi, the first Canadian of Indian origin to be elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Ali is CNN’s Chief Business Correspondent and anchor of the network’sYour Money program as well as co-host of CNN International’s World Business Today show.
After leaving Queen’s, Ali began his career as a reporter for CFTO (CTV Toronto). He then worked at CityTV as a business reporter before moving to the Business News Network as host of The Business News. In 2001 he moved again, this time to New York to join CNN.
Over the years, Ali has received many awards and accolades including the National Headliner Award for Business & Consumer Reporting. He also played a big part in CNN’s 2010 Emmy nomination with his reporting of an attempted terror attack on a Delta flight bound for Detroit. However, it is the Queen’s University Alumni Achievement Award he received in 2010 that is closest to his heart. Recently Ali returned to Queen’s to emcee the Initiative Campaign launch event.
