Raised to understand the importance of giving back, Amma Bonsu’s education at Queen’s (Artsci’02, Artsci’03) further cemented her commitment to community and generosity. Amma was born and raised in Ghana, but came to Canada in 1998 to further her education.
During her time at Queen's, Amma was the Social Issues Commissioner for the Alma Mater Society and undertook many outreach and humanitarian initiatives, including a cultural pride and anti-hate parade and raising awareness of poverty and diversity issues. She also started Operation Read, which shipped more than 60,000 books to Ghana, Namibia and Pakistan.
Amma co-founded Foundation for Growth, a not-for-profit organization raising funds for educational supplies and renovations to schools in Ghana. Since 2010 she has expanded her commitment to Africa by profiling individuals and organizations who are transforming communities in countries that have been affected by war or economic unrest. She is now sharing these stories on her website ammazingseries.com. In 2010 she was awarded the Queen’s University Alumni Association Humanitarian Award for her outstanding work.
