Dr. Janet Smylie has been invited to speak at Queen’s as part of the Tatham Henderson Lecture Series on Wednesday, October 13th at 5:30pm in the School of Medicine Building and virtually. Dr. Smylie is a recognized expert in Indigenous health and is one of Canada's first Métis physicians.
 
Dr. Smylie will be speaking about health services in, what is now known as Canada, have largely been constructed without consideration of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) approaches and perspectives. As a result, they are commonly of limited social value for First Peoples. In this lecture Dr. Smylie will reflect on the idea of “generative” Indigenous health services from her Metis perspective. She will then share strategies and examples of how to progress “generative” health services for FNIM populations across geographies.

About the Speaker 

Dr. Janet Smylie is a leading international expert in the field of Indigenous Health. As the first Métis physician in Canada, Dr. Smylie’s career has focused on addressing inequities in the health of Indigenous peoples of Canada by bridging gaps in health knowledge and practice. Dr. Smylie was trained in medicine at Queen’s University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Toronto. In addition, she practices and teaches family medicine in diverse Indigenous communities – urban, rural, and remote.
