Queen's University Internship Program allows qualified students the opportunity to pursue career-related positions for 12 or 16 months after completion of their second or third year of study at Queen’s. The program is open to domestic and international students in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, Faculty of Arts and Science, and School of Computing.
Job openings under this program are posted by Career Services throughout the year. In addition to the industrial experience for which the intern earns a salary, the Program includes prior workshops on resume preparation, interviewing, work performance, and employer expectations.
Successful completion of the program requires submission of a formal report or presentation, and a satisfactory assessment of the intern’s performance by the Employer.
Physics & Astronomy Students
(Faculty of Arts & Science)
Students are eligible to earn additional internship credits, making them eligible for a Bachelor of Arts (or Science) degree with a professional internship designation that will appear on their transcript and diploma.

Engineering Students
(Smith Engineering)
As an Engineering and Applied Science student, you will enroll in courses APSC 301, 302, 303 and 304 - Professional Internship, for which you will receive academic credit. Your diploma, after successfully fulfilling the requirements will read: Bachelor of Applied Science, with Professional Internship.

Absolutely! Many make lasting contacts and work at the same company upon graduation. Further, employers are currently very interested in obtaining graduates with quality, engineering-related experience. Incidentally, they also look for this experience in the diverse extra-curricular activities in which the graduates have been involved.
Students appreciate a long-term internship after their second or third year because they feel that they have more to contribute with two or three years of education behind them. Employers really appreciate the opportunity to train highly competent students, and for this reason some make it a point to hire only Queen's interns.
No. A great feature of this program is that it is completely optional. Students can apply for the internship program and see if they receive the placement that they want. They do not have to accept a placement that is out of their field of interest. They can even decide not to do the program and continue their normal course of studies, however they are expected to apply only to those positions in which they have a serious interest. In traditional co-op programs, one may not necessarily find work in one's field of interest through the program and may need to search for placements independently, or accept a position one doesn't want, in order to remain in the program.
Queen's students are also able to get summer jobs in industry in the years they are not on internship. Career Services is one of the great resources available to help you find relevant summer jobs.
Of course! The Sci Formal is definitely worth the trip for many interns. Students who wish to attend the Sci Formal are required to spend a number of hours working on its preparation, but reductions in the requirements are granted to QUIP students who request it.
