Zhe She, Group Leader

Zhe completed his Mchem degree at University of Leeds (2004-2008), followed by a PhD study in surface chemistry and electrochemistry at University of St. Andrews (2008-2012). He carried out his postdoctoral work in protein aggregation, atomic force microscopy and electrochemical biosensors at University of Toronto (2012-2015). He was a Calian Contractor and Senior Researcher with Royal Military College of Canada (2015-2018). He joined the Department of Chemistry, Queen’s University as an assistant professor in 2018 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2024. In addition to chemistry, Zhe enjoys reading history books, visiting museums and cycling.

Tianxiao Ma, Postdoctoral Researcher

Tianxiao Ma is a postdoctoral researcher in the group. Her current research focuses on copper corrosion protection using N-heterocyclic carbene through electrochemistry and scanning microscopy techniques. Her academic journey began with training as an electrochemist at the University of British Columbia, where she earned my PhD from 2017 to 2022, and prior to that, at the University of Toronto Scarborough from 2013 to 2017. Beyond the research pursuits, she is an avid climber and runner, continuously striving to summit new mountains.

Rebecca Chen, PhD Student

Rebecca Chen (any pronouns) is pursuing their PhD co-supervised by Dr. Zhe She (Department of Chemistry) and Dr. Stephen Brown (Department of Chemistry, School of Environmental Studies). Rebecca is developing electrochemical (bio)sensors to detect and identify bacteria and reveal if they are antibiotic-resistant. Rebecca completed their BSc in Honours Cooperative Biochemistry, Biotechnology Specialization, Minor in Psychology at the University of Waterloo. During her free time, Rebecca enjoys biking, hiking, cooking, craft, and hanging out with their 2 cats!!

Adekunle Omoboye, PhD Student

Adekunle Omoboye is working on Investigating self-assembled monolayers and biological molecules using electrochemistry and scanning probe microscopy towards developing new tools for bioanalytical detection and biomedical applications. He is a recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Sciences and Technology (QEII-GSST) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Graduate Scholarship-Doctoral (CGS D). He obtained his Bachelor's Degree from the Federal University of Technology in Akure, Nigeria, before pursuing a Master's degree in Food Science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. In his leisure time, he finds joy in both cooking and watching soccer. Adekunle is particularly passionate about supporting Arsenal Football Club in England.

Saheda Tamanna, PhD Student

Saheda Tamanna obtained her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering from Noakhali Science and Technology University, Bangladesh in 2021. She did her MS.c. thesis in molecular biology department at National Institute of Biotechnology where she worked to determine the influence of OXTR gene variants on cooperation among university graduates. She is currently studying for PhD degree in Dr. She’s lab in Chemistry Department and co-supervised by Dr. Louise Meunier in Chemical Engineering Department at Queen’s University. Tamanna loves walking in the farming land, countryside and explore new culture.

Kailai Wang, PhD Student

Kailai Wang is studying electrochemical properties of N-heterocyclic carbenes on metal surfaces. He is co-supervised by Dr Cathleen Crudden, Chemistry department, Queen’s university. Kailai completed his BSc and MSc degrees at Carleton University. During free time, Kailai enjoys hiking, cooking and any type of games.

Heather McCallum, MSc Student

Heather McCallum completed her Bachelors of Science (Honours) in Astrophysics at University of Calgary in 2023. She is currently developing surface decontamination methods for removing polonium from copper in collaboration with NEWS-G and their dark matter detector. She is co-supervised by Dr Emily Corcoran and Dr. Fiona Kelly from Royal Military College of Canada. In her spare time, Heather enjoys reading, running and hiking.

Kayla Elliot, MSc Student

Kayla Elliot is an accelerated MSc student in the group. She is co-supervised by Dr. Sarah Jane Payne. Kayla is developing new detection methods for monitoring manganese in drinking water. During free time, she enjoys, listening to music, being outside, and spending time with family and friends
