Queen’s signs the Magna Charta Universitatum

Queen’s University is one of the newest signatories of the Magna Charta Universitatum, joining a collective of close to 900 universities around the globe. Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane signed the document at a ceremony closing the Magna Charta Observatory’s annual conference, held for the first time in North America at McMaster University in Hamilton on Oct. 17.

Celebrating with the Queen’s community

On a historic day at Queen’s, as Patrick Deane was installed as the 21st principal and vice-chancellor of the university. Over 400 people attended the ceremony on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Grant Hall, which has been the site of almost every installation since it opened in 1905.

Following the academic procession into the hall, Chancellor Jim Leech delivered an official welcome to the audience. Donald Raymond, Chair of the Board of Trustees, then presented Principal Deane to the chancellor, who led the new principal through the Pledge of Office.

Queen’s names its next Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic)

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane announced Mark F. Green (Sc’87) will serve as Queen’s University's next Provost and Vice-Principal (Academic). Dr. Green is a skilled and respected administrator, accomplished researcher, admired teacher, and champion of diversity and inclusivity who currently holds the position of Vice Dean (Graduate Studies and Recruitment) at the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Queen’s. He will begin his five-year term as Provost on March 1, 2020, succeeding Interim Provost Tom Harris.

Staff members go above and beyond

Queen’s relies on the contributions of its over 2,000 staff members to fulfill its academic mission. Each year, Queen’s recognizes the outstanding work of several employees through the Special Recognition for Staff Awards. These awards are organized by Human Resources, and they are presented to staff members who perform at a level “significantly beyond what is usually expected." They can be awarded to either individual staff members or teams.

Principal’s Holiday Reception celebrates Queen’s staff and faculty

The contributions of Queen’s University staff and faculty were celebrated on Wednesday, Dec. 11, during the annual Principal’s Holiday Reception.

The annual celebration is the highlight of Staff Appreciation Day and is hosted by Principal and Vice-Chancellor Patrick Deane in the main gym of the Athletics and Recreation Centre.

Principal’s statement on camp accident

Principal Patrick Deane shares statement on accident involving child at summer camp on July 31.

Yesterday afternoon, I was deeply concerned to learn a young child was struck by a car while returning from a Queen's camp outing at City Park. The child was immediately taken to hospital by ambulance and placed under the care of physicians for non-life threatening injuries.

I want to personally extend my deepest sympathy to our camper and the camper’s family.
