Stéphanie Martel and Richard Patenaude Recognized with AMS Teaching Awards

The department would like to congratulate assistant professor Stéphanie Martel and PhD candidate Richard Patenaude on receiving AMS Teaching Awards for the 2019-2020 academic year.  

Stéphanie Martel is the recipient of the Frank Knox Award for Excellence in Teaching, which recognizes and acknowledges Queen’s University professors who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to the education of their students. The award is named in honour of Frank Knox, a professor of economics who taught at Queen’s for forty years and demonstrated tremendous dedication to the education of undergraduate students.

Richard Patenaude is the recipient of the Christopher Knapper Award for Excellence in Teaching, which is given to teaching assistants who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the education of students at Queen’s University. This award is named in honour of Christopher Knapper, the founding Director of the Instructional Development Centre (IDC), who showed genuine concern about the needs of students and furthered the educational environment at Queen’s.

Both awards are student initiatives, and the student body are responsible for nominating the recipients of the award.

 “I was deeply touched and humbled to learn that my students took the time, especially in such extraordinary circumstances, to nominate me for this Award,” says Stéphanie Martel (pictured). "I feel immensely privileged to be able to teach, and get to know, such amazing students each semester. Knowing that the energy I put into teaching and mentoring has a positive impact on them is the best kind of validation there is, and the perfect motivation to continue to seek ways to improve. I am truly grateful to these students and the AMS for this honour.”
