Brief Description

Summer research positions in the Department of Physics and Space Science at the Royal Military College of Canada are available for highly qualified students under the NSERC Undergraduate Summer Research Award (USRA) program. Potential projects may include:

  • Investigation of the radio and X-ray emission properties of hot magnetic stars
  • Study of the interactions of pulsation, turbulence, and magnetic fields of Cepheid variables
  • Exploration of magnetic field generation via mass transfer and mergers in binary systems

Nature of the position: The research assistant will assist with data analysis and interpretation within the Stellar Magnetism research group. They will interact directly on a daily/weekly basis with a team of faculty, and postgraduate, graduate, and undergraduate researchers.

 

Location: The position is situated at Royal Military College of Canada (RMC), Kingston, Ontario, in the research group of Dr. Wade in the Department of Physics and Space Science. This is an in-person position, with a place of work to be negotiated if desired.

Dates and hours: This is a full-time position (37.5 h/week) from the first week of May until mid-August 2023 (16 weeks), with some flexibility.

Financial support: The successful candidate will be funded by a competitive NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) supplemented from Dr. Wade’s NSERC Discovery Grant.

Qualifications:  The successful applicant will have completed at least two years of a physical science program with a preference for those who have completed Introduction to Astrophysics (PHYS 216). Computer programming skills (e.g., Python), the desire to learn new skills, and the ability to work in a team will be essential. To apply you must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, and registered as a full-time student.
