Javier Cercas was born in 1962 in Cáceres and teaches literature at the University of Girona. He is the author of novels, collections of chronicles and stories, and is a columnist for the daily El País. His novels have been translated into more than 30 languages and have enjoyed widespread international success. He received the Planeta Prize in 2019 and his book "Anatomy of an Instant" was named Book of the Year 2009 by El País. He receives the Premio Azul 2021 for his work as a whole.
The Metropolis Azul Prize is awarded annually to the author of a literary work written in Spanish, French or English that deals with Hispanic culture or history, regardless of the author's country of origin. The award is sponsored by Ginny Stikeman to ensure the presence of Spanish literature at the Blue Metropolis Festival.
