Vulindlela: Out the Gates Procession at Agnes

Vulindlela: Out the Gates Procession at Agnes

When:
Saturday, July 15, 2023
3:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Where:
Agnes Etherington Art Centre
Find on Campus Map
Description:

South African music icon Brenda Fassie’s Vulindlela was released in 1997 after the end of apartheid. Although it was still part of a deeply racially divided social milieu, it rose to become an anthem of celebration and expressed the hope of freedom. In July 2023 the Lang Collection of African Art makes the journey, along with Indigenous ancestors and Queen’s transfer collection, to a new temporary abode on campus while we prepare for Agnes Reimagined. As a moment of celebration, Agnes staff and members of the broader community enact a procession that honors the African collection through music, poetry and dance. All are welcome!

Participants in the procession will be gifted a curated poetry bundle.
Eleven Metal Tongues is written by award winning poet, Juliane Okot Bitek. The Lang Collection of African Art acted as a catalyst for the poems.

Curated by Qanita Lilla, Associate Curator, Arts of Africa

GenoChemetic Diversification of Natural Products

(Blending SynBio+ SynChem : The Best of Both Worlds)

Rebecca J. M. Goss

School of Chemistry, University of St Andrews

Though natural products represent a treasure trove of medicinally relevant compounds, they are commonly misperceived to be unsuitable for medicinal chemistry. We are developing new approaches to natural product analogue synthesis by blending together synthetic biology and synthetic chemistry. By complementing the biosynthetic machinery encoding an existing natural product with foreign genes we are able to introduce chemically orthogonal, reactive and selectable functionalisable handles into natural products.1 We have been developing mild chemical methodologies to enable the chemical derivatization of these handles.2,3

Here we report new enzymatic tools for late stage halogenation of molecules including a viral encoded iodinase,4 and mild and even cell compatible cross-coupling methodologies for use in GenoChemetic approaches.

Description:

Magnetic Microrobots and Their Applications to Biology and Medicine

Abstract:

Robots at the micro/nanoscale, termed micro/nanorobots, have the advantage of accessing small and hard-to-reach spaces within the human body. While extensive research has shown their applications for drug delivery, it is much less explored whether microrobots can be directly used to understand and treat disease. Dr. Xian Wang’s research talk will focus on two aspects of microrobot’s applications: one on exploring the tumor cell biology knowledge that wasn’t able to be deciphered due to the lack of tool; the other on developing novel tumor treatment approaches based on the mechanical stimulation generated by the magnetic mico/nano robotic agents. These contributions have made crucial advancements for translating microrobotic techniques from the lab to the world.
