FIRST MEETING NOVEMBER 24, 2023, 12-1pm (lunch included, let us know any dietary restrictions)! The Levana Critical Feminisms Reading Group’s aim is to provide an accessible space to engage with critical feminisms across various mediums such as theory, art, and visual media. This group is open to all members of the Queen’s University campus community. Those who are new to critical feminist scholarship and artistic practices, and those who have long worked with them in their own scholarly practice are welcome. We meet every three weeks over a meal and have an informal, conversational discussion about a piece of media (selected by the group from a list of pooled suggestions in the previous meeting).

The group is premised on bell hooks’ (1991) essay ‘Theory as Liberatory Practice’, valuing the engagement of critical feminisms in scholarly theory as well as through everyday worldmaking praxis. We meet in the radical hope of collective liberation from all systems of oppression. We specify plurality of feminisms intentionally, and our reading list spans various feminist approaches as well as those that do not use this label, including: decolonial approaches, Black feminist theories, trans studies, activist and artistic practices, queer theory, critical feminist disability studies, crip theory, interdisciplinary works or those that resist categorization, and approaches that de-center Western academia.
