Statement on the Earthquake in Morocco

Dr. Sandra den Otter, Vice-Provost, Global Engagement - Sep 11, 2023

The Queen’s University community is deeply saddened to learn of the devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Morocco late Friday, September 8, 2023.

We wish to express our concern and care for our Moroccan students in the Queen’s community, our Moroccan alumni, our colleagues at our exchange partner Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, and all those in the affected regions who are enduring the severe consequences of this unfolding catastrophe.

Our partnership with the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University has been a productive exchange relationship within the Faculty of Arts and Science since its establishment in 2010. We greatly value the ongoing work and commitment that faculty, students, and staff at Queen’s and UM6P have contributed to nurturing and strengthening this valuable collaboration.

At Queen's University, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation. The university has a robust support system for individuals facing adversity. While this support was initially communicated to members of the Queen's community upon the initial news of the earthquake, we have provided a list of these resources below to ensure that everyone is aware of their availability.

In addition, those interested in contributing financially to relief efforts may wish to do so through the Canadian Red Cross. The Red Cross Red Crescent are leading many humanitarian efforts in the region.

Through the Queen’s University International Centre, the university will continue to contact directly international students and new Canadians who also have family and strong ties to the region to provide information, resources, and guidance.

All students can turn to supports and resources offered by Queen’s and campus groups. Student Wellness Services has expanded mental health services and weekly student wellness groups, and students can also access support at the AMS Peer Support Centre. Faith and Spiritual Life also offers multi-faith, non-judgmental support. Graduate students can access 24/7 crisis support and counselling through Empower Me. Good2Talk is another 24/7 phone service available to all postsecondary students in Ontario.

Support resources for the Queen’s faculty and staff and their family members can be found at any time through the Employee and Family Assistance Program (EFAP).
